Having three children of primary age means that we always need a good supply of outdoor toys for Summer, and ours definitely needs a refresh.
We were delighted to be asked to review Trampoline Tennis by the Happy Puzzle Company. The packaging is bright and eye catching, whilst depicting the idea behind the game in a lovely illustration on the box.
The medium sized trampoline discs were red and blue, with black stretchy material over the centre. They measure 37cm in diameter which is larger than I imagined, however they are so light in weight that even my 5-year-old could handle them by himself. We also received a small red and blue ball in the set which is made of rubber strings.
You can buy the discs in a smaller size of 30cm also if you prefer.
This is really a 3-in-1 toy. You have the main game of trampoline tennis, were you play in pairs and hit the ball off the trampoline base towards your opponent, either to try to defeat them or to keep a rally going for as long as possible. The ball bounces off the disc with very little effort required.
The second game is to use the disc as a giant frisbee (boy does it fly!) and the third is a game of catch with the special string ball.
This game can also be played alone, as you perfect tricks or try to hit the ball as high as you can or as many times in a row as possible. The ball really can bounce a long way! We even tried flipping the disc over between hits before the ball dropped back down. There are so many opportunities for tricks and dares.
It does get you moving around a lot too. The ball can bounce very high so a large garden or park are needed unless you have neighbours who are happy to keep tossing the ball back over the fence. The large size of the disc means that play can continue for quite some time as you have more chance of hitting the ball, which is fantastic for younger children especially. However older children can challenge themselves by standing at large distances apart from their opponent to really make their friend run.
We had great fun as it really is different from anything else we have played. You can hold the disc with two hands to bounce the ball, or older children can hold the edge with one hand and really hit it hard to get some distance between players.
It’s fun, silly and great to take to the beach, park or on holiday with you as it takes up very little space in the car. My husband had my 8-year-old running all over the garden and diving for the ball, and we even set targets such as bouncing it over the top bar of the climbing frame. It really is versatile and lends itself to lots of different play opportunities.
The target age is 5 plus which seems about right; a younger child could play this but they may not possess the hand/eye co-ordination skills required to play properly, or may not be able to handle the disc. As an adult I enjoyed this game, so there isn’t really an upper age limit.
One minor point is that I would have liked there to have been two string balls in the set, as I envisage us losing one on a roof at some stage. They could be easily replaced for £2.49 from the Happy Puzzle Company directly, but I think two balls would have been a nice touch.
Whilst the RRP of £24.99 seems fair for the quality, I would feel happier if that second ball was included with the set for this price.
I would award this toy 5 stars out of 5; it is a fantastic toy for outdoors this Summer, with lots of play opportunities to keep little kids and big kids entertained and burning off energy.
Rating overall: 5/5 stars
