Black + Blum Stainless Steel Lunch Set Review

We all have to eat! While breakfast may be considered the most important meal of the day, lunch is a must (I get the most painful of migraines if I skip and don’t eat at regular times). Eating out every day can cost a fortune, even for just a humble sandwich and a drink! So having a packed lunch, especially when I take long train journey is, is a must. Not only does a packed lunch ensure that you get the food you want and not have to compromise with a sandwich you don’t entirely like, having a packed lunch also reduces food packaging waste and means you also get to control the size of the portion you want. While there are plenty of lunch boxes on the market, most are made from plastic and whilst they do the job perfectly well, I was delighted to receive a stainless set lunch set from Black+Blum to try out.

Black+Blum are based in London and started in 1998, creating products that are eco-friendly where possible, made from long-lasting materials and designed to encourage reusability while discouraging single-use plastics and food waste. Their range has plenty of item for food on the go and consists of:

• Water bottles
• Lunch boxes
• Thermoses

I received their Stainless Steel Lunch Set which consists of 500ml Insulated Water Bottle and 1l Lunch Box. Both products are made from high quality stainless steel and 100% leakproof. And both look absolutely great, different and ooze quality.

Lunch Box

The lunch box has a 1 litre capacity, so holds a decent-sized lunch. It is leakproof, airtight, oven-safe (base only) and freezer-safe, is made from high quality stainless steel, is BPA free and plastic free. It has a stainless steel moveable/removable food diver inside and a fork included (the fork is secured on the outside of the lunch box using a silicone strap. It measures approx. 20cm (L) x 15cm (W) x 6.5cm (H) and weighs approx. 460g.

This is a vacuum sealed box and keeps the contents nice and fresh, it is the first 100% leakproof one on the market due to having a secure vacuum-sealed closure. To ensure the freshness, it has a value on top of the lid that seals the lid so to open needs to be lifted (and pushed down when the lid is placed back on to seal it again).

Water Bottle

The insulated water bottle has a 500ml capacity and keeps drinks hot or cold. Hot drinks for 12 hours, cold drinks for 24 hours. It is vacuum sealed, made from high quality stainless steel, is BPA free and uses a vegan leather strap. It measures approx. 7.3cm (D) x 23.5cm (H) and weighs 280g.

This is a fantastic looking set. It looks and feels quality.

The lunch box has enough room for a couple of sandwiches, wet or dry food and is perfect for all food types. The lunch box is suitable for food storage in the freezer and can also be used as an oven dish with the lid removed (although be warned, this could lead to discolouration of the stainless steel). The vacuum seal ensures it is airtight and leakproof and keeps any food as fresh as when you put it in. It is easy to clean (the box base, slider/divider and fork are dishwasher safe and the silicone strap and lid are handwash only). The fork is of excellent quality, while a bit smaller than a standard dinner fork it is comfortable to hold.

The water bottle is great. Again it looks great, smooth and classy with the ocean trim and tan vegan leather strap (keeps the lid attached to the bottle when open). The screw thread is on the inside to allow easy drinking from the bottle and it has a wide opening for easy pouring and cleaning.

I have used is for tea and cold drinks and is has done an excellent job of keeping both drinks at the right temperature until lunch time. And it hasn’t leaked in my bag!

It is easy to clean (handwash only – it is not dishwasher safe) and the strap can be unsnapped from the bottle to make cleaning the bottle easier.

I love this stainless steel lunch set from Black+Blum. While its primary purpose is holding my lunch, it does this with ease, doesn’t leak, keeps my drinks at the perfect temperature and my sandwiches nice and fresh, all while looking great and no plastic in sight. In an age where we are trying to limit our use of plastics this set is a very good start.

Due to the quality of the set, I feel that is would make an excellent Christmas gift. It just exudes quality and has that luxury look and feel.
