Feel Good Friends I Feel Good About Me by Amy Rogers & Lucy Rogers Review

Reviewed by Diane Wilkinson

“I Feel Good About Me” is an interactive book for children to complete with details about their life, but with a twist on the ordinary “all about me” format. It encourages children to think about feelings, the future and about what makes them unique and special.

It starts off with basic tasks such as asking children to write or draw about themselves, their families, their school life and their favourite things. It then moves on to asking them to think about things they would like to have if they could such as what famous person they would like to meet, what wishes they would make, and what they think they will look like when they are older. There are lot of tasks to encourage talk, particularly about feelings, as the book asks the child to complete sentences such as “These are things that I am proud of…” and “Things that make me excited are….” It also promotes a caring attitude by encouraging thought about how we care for ourselves and others.

I used this book with my 8-year old who sometimes has difficulty expressing her feelings and emotions. We worked through it together, which I would recommend as discussion with an adult really helps the child to crystallize their thoughts and be clear about how they will complete the tasks. My daughter also has literacy difficulties so it was great that she could fill in the blanks by drawing as well as writing if desired. The colourful illustrations and layout of different-shaped boxes to write/draw in helped to engage her and she really enjoyed working through the book. Once complete, she was thrilled to have a whole book devoted to her and her thoughts, feelings and wishes!

I would recommend this book for adults to use with their primary-aged children, particularly those who need help and encouragement to view themselves positively. Once complete it is useful to look back on whenever a child is experiencing negative emotions or low self-esteem. In years to come I imagine it will be fun to look at the final page – a list of things the child would like to do in the future – to see what they have achieved.

Highly recommended.
