What a privilege it was to be asked to review The Full Monty at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow.
On arrival at the King’s Theatre we were standing waiting in the main foyer surrounded by people of all ages and quite surprisingly a lot of men (who had no doubt been dragged along by their excited other halves). The staff were so helpful and gave us our tickets and pointed us in the right direction to our seats in the Grand Circle.
The story follows a group of unemployed men desperately seeking work and one Dad’s struggle to keep contact with his son after splitting from his wife then losing his job at the steelworks leading to him being unable to keep up his maintenance payments, the plan that ensued lead to hilarity and some well-deserved money.
The curtains were raised and the scenery was revealed to be the inside of the steelworks and before you knew it there was glass being smashed and the Lovely Gary Lucy, who was playing Gaz , popped his head through and the audience let out a massive cheer. He was closely followed by Nathan and then Dave.
The use of the main steelworks backdrop and the extra parts to make it the outside of the working men’s club, the conservative club and the job centre was sheer genius and worked perfectly.
There was a lot of audience participation much to the casts shock but filled the theatre with laughs and at some points almost tears.
The cast were all absolutely fantastic and very professional and big congratulations to Raif Clarke who played the part of Nathan brilliantly despite the nature of the play and managed to hold in his giggles at times when I would have struggled. Gary, Rupert, Martin, Bobby, Louis and Andrew I take my hat off to you all for being so brave and taking your parts so seriously.
My favourite part has still got to be the Job Centre queue with Donna Summers Hot Stuff playing in the background, this was performed brilliantly and definitely did not disappoint.
I give this show 5/5 and would highly recommend you to go and see it.
Tickets cost from £11.90 to £32.40 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
