The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time at Milton Keynes Theatre Review

4-16 September 2017

It was my pleasure to return to Milton Keynes Theatre last night (4 September 2017) to review The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

This tells the story of Christopher, an extremely intelligent young man who suffers from Asperger Syndrome. Christopher struggles in social situations, making noises and hitting out when touched by others, his physical contact with his parents was one open hand against theirs, he attends a school for children with special educational needs, Christopher loves maths and outer space.

The play takes us on a journey after Christopher finds his neighbour’s dog dead in the night on the lawn, killed by a garden fork. Christopher turns detective to find out who killed Mrs Shears dog. The audience is transported into the mind of Christopher, how he copes in the social situations, how he needs for things to be explained to him in the most simplistic of ways including how long exactly to be quiet for!

The stage set was simple with little props, the characters themselves becoming the set, I found this extremely clever, from the lollies that were just lolly pop sticks, the revolving door that was a person and I loved the scene on the train where the cast worked together to create the illusion of movement. But the complexity of the lighting of the stage set itself, I found spectacular.

Scott Reid played the part of Christopher Boone extremely well, accompanied by a great cast with many playing several characters.

To sum it up, this play for me was a thought-provoking visual delight. I would give this 4/5 and highly recommend that you go and see this.

Milton Keynes is a modern theatre in Central Milton Keynes, well signposted, surrounded by a variety of restaurants and bars. The staff were pleasant as always, toilets were clean and tidy.
