The Calm Society Destress Candle 150g Review

As an aromatherapist and lover of candles, diffusers, room sprays etc, I was delighted to receive The Calm Society Destress Candle 150g direct from Holland and Barrett.

Before I even opened the box and took the lid off the jar, I was in sensory overload with the aroma. It was delightful and I could not wait to use it.

So lit the candle, ran myself a bath, with essential oils of course, got in, laid back and relaxed. This allowed the candle to burn slowly, taking in the aroma smells. This was really and absolutely a sheer and pure indulgence experience. I actually felt like I was in a very luxurious and up market spa hotel room. The essential oils used were obviously of good quality as the aroma was still there the next day. If anyone knows anything about aromatherapy oils, they come in different notes, top, middle and base and these oils used in this candle use a mixture of them.

After the bath, I moved the candle into my bedroom where I got into bed, laid there and listened to some relaxation music. I was in heaven. I made sure I blew the candle out before turning in for the night. I have to say, that night, I slept like a baby and woke up feeling so relaxed and at peace and still smell the oils from the candle. My room spelt like a spa room and lasted a good couple of days.

The oils used in the candle are as follows to which, based on my learnings and studies, I have also added the note of each oil if anyone is interested to learn more about them:-

Undiluted essential oils
Lemongrass Top note
Peppermint Top note
Ylang Ylang Base note
Pine Needle Top Note
Lavender Middle note

If found the candle to burn evenly and as per the instructions on the box, on the first burn, I trimmed the wick by 5mm and then I let it stay alight for a minimum of 4 hours. It burnt evenly without any candle waste on the edge of the jar like other cheap brands. When it come to burning it again, using my fingers, I took away the residue on top of the wick, this allows the wick to burn steadily and evenly and prevents black smoke.

The combination of the oils gives you a calm, relaxed and warm feeling which could help with anxiety, stress, tiredness or any other strenuous activities you may be experience.

The benefits of all essential oils and especially this blend, gives you relaxation of the mind, body and soul. The essential oils connect with many cilia receptors including your nose. The receptors give a chemical signal to what is known as the ‘Olfactory’ which is in your nose. I will not say anymore on that as it does get very scientific but wanted to mention it so you can understand a bit about how the aromatherapy oils work with our senses. Do read up on it if you are interested as it makes good reading.

When you are not using the candle, do ensure that you keep it in a cool and dark place and make sure you keep it out of the direct sunlight. The photosynthesis will deplete the quality of the essential oils and if too warm, the wax will deteriorate slowly, making it burn unevenly.
