If you have a small child or have ever looked after one, then you’ll likely have experienced an independent toddler who just loves the freedom of walking (or in my case, running!) and exploring the big wide world around them. However, they probably have yet to understand the dangers that can lurk so closely by. Although they might be small, those little legs of theirs can be extremely quick and unfortunately, children aren’t always predictable with their thought patterns and processes, meaning that their actions can land them in some precarious and even dangerous situations at times. I certainly don’t want to stifle my little girls sense of fun and interest in her surroundings, but none the less, I would like it to be carried out in a controlled and safe manner where she still enjoys herself!

I was kindly given the chance to review one of the LittleLife backpacks for my little girl and I immediately knew that this would be a really practical and useful product to own but it’s also an item that I knew she would love to walk around wearing and play with too!!

LittleLife Backpacks provide an opportunity for parents to afford some level of autonomy for their toddlers, whilst at the same time having a degree of influence over the child’s free rein. The backpacks come in the most gorgeous and creative designs which children will just love to wear whilst also having a detachable rein!!

The range of LittleLife backpacks can be viewed on their website (https://www.littlelife.com/products/toddler-daysacks) and I was so impressed by the vast array of designs available to purchase! Whether you have a stomping dinosaur, buzzing bumble bee, fluttering butterfly or roaring tiger, you’ll be sure to find a backpack that your little cherub will be excited to run around wearing! Happy child equals happy Mummy… winner, winner!!

It was a tough decision trying to choose which design my daughter would like best. We are currently very keen on pretend play, especially when it comes to making the siren noises of ambulances, police cars and fire engines. When I saw the three, realistic little bags that LittleLife have made with high-vis detailing and touch activated blue flashing lights, I thought that these backpacks with reins were very strong contenders!!! She would get such a thrill pretending to be a paramedic for the day and neatly packing all her medicine kit inside the zipped storage area ready for her to spring into action, switch on her blue light and hurriedly run around shouting ‘nee-naw, nee-naw’ as she saves one of her dolls lives!!

However, when my gaze came across the unicorn bag, with a bright pink soft mane, blue shoulder straps and a silver sparkly unicorn horn, the decision was made… my little Princess would just simply LOVE this backpack with all the magical and enchanting fun it would have to offer and it is predominantly in her 2 most favourite colours… pink and blue!

The white bag is adorned with pink, white and blue stars and a matching coloured rainbow on each side. The adjustable backpack shoulder straps, chest straps, carry handle, harness and detachable rein are made of a strong durable nylon type of material. A blue zip across the top of the bag gains access into a 2 litre storage compartment. This is ideal for keeping some wipes, a drink and the ever important ‘snacks’ that are required whenever a toddler leaves the house. Alternatively, and in my daughters case, this is an essential carry section for her bunny (not a real one but a soft plush toy!) who has to come on all our adventures and be close by at all times!

The main backpack is approximately 19cm in height, 24cm wide and 15cm in depth. Inside, it has a printed name and address label which is always helpful if the backpack is taken to school or accidentally left somewhere – this helps to identify the owner.

When my little girl first saw the backpack, she immediately wanted to try it on and she very proudly twirled in delight before ‘clip clopping’ off as she turned into the magical unicorn that she thought she now was!

I really like that the back pack comes with a detachable safety rein. This means I can attach the rein when we are out or when I feel that I need to keep my little one close by and prevent her from galloping off, but I can also then remove it when required too and just use the backpack as a simple bag. You can either store the rein inside the main storage compartment so it doesn’t get separated from the back pack, or you can keep it elsewhere and merely use the back as an actual small backpack.

The adjustable straps allow for some growing room but also provides some flexibility allowance for the layers of clothing that might be worn underneath it (like a big padded coat in the winter versus a t-shirt in the summer). They would certainly allow for slightly older children to wear the bag too (4-5 years of age). The chest strap is secured with a clip which my daughter can do up, but most importantly, she has not yet got the grip strength and dexterity to unclip it which is essential when using the backpack for the reins element! She can’t take the backpack off so can’t escape!!!

The backpack packaging states that the bags are aimed for toddlers aged 1-3 and it complies with the safety standard EN 13210:2004. It also includes some instructions for fitting, warning notices and care instructions. The bag can be hand washed.

With the majority of the LittleLife backpacks coming in at around the £20 mark, they make for a brilliant and practical little gift. Sometimes we don’t need a reason of an event like a Birthday or Christmas to give a gift. Why not treat a little person in your life to an exciting new bag and one which they can merrily play the day away using!
