Peppersmith mints, gums and pastilles.
How is Peppersmith different?
They make mints & gums that are sweetened with 100% xylitol. They help keep teeth healthy and are full of actively good, naturally derived ingredients that have no chemical nasties or animal derived junk! Quite a claim! Are they tasty as well? Yes!
Peppersmith started with Dan & Mike who met in 2003 (at an Innocent Smoothy empire) where they began discussing how they could produce a healthy mint/gum. In 2009 they had two big breaks:
1 The discovery of the plant-based sweetener, xylitol.
2 They discovered the world’s best mint farm in Hampshire.
2010 Peppersmith chewing gum is born.
2011 They launched the first 100% xylitol mints and additional flavours of gum.
2014 Further improvements after listening to the nation.
2016 Mighty pouches are launched and then in:
2019 relaunched as Mighty boxes—in recyclable packaging.
2019-2020 Office moves from London to East Sussex.
2022-2023 Fresh new looks plus fresh opportunities.
They sell 80 million mints per year and have new customers in Australia, Holland, Japan, Turkey and across Europe.
“Healthy, Natural and Simple with more sustainable packaging”.
What is in their products?
Xylitol: a clever little ingredient that keeps teeth healthy by clearing away bacteria and plague in the mouth. It comes from trees and plants making Peppersmith mints and gums suitable for vegetarians, vegans and just about everyone! It is claimed to kill 90% of bacteria.
Peppermint (Mentha Piperita): the peppermint they use is called Black Mitcham (named after Mitcham in Surrey), a crop native to England.
Spearmint (Mentha Spicata): is from the same farm but has a bit more spice and bitterness compared to peppermint. This is the mint we usually grow in our back gardens.
Lemons: real lemons grown in Sicily. They use two different varieties, the Femminello and the Monachello, these are popular in the region for their zesty taste. They only use the rind of the lemon making the PH neutral (so no acids).
Strawberry: this is used in their strawberry pastille recipe and they extract the flavour from real strawberries, plus natural vanilla and tomato lycopene to give them their pinkish/red colour.
Natural Eucalyptus oil: this makes the extra strong mints extra strong! They only use the natural stuff from a real eucalyptus plant.
Sunflower Lecithin & Vegetable Glycerol: Lecithin helps get an even mix of their ingredients, theirs comes from European GMO free sunflowers. Glycerol stops the gum from drying out. They get theirs from rapeseed oil. NO PALM OIL!
Cacium Stearate: this stops all the ingredients sticking to the machines during manufacturing. Theirs is sourced from vegetables.
Gum Arabic & Carnauba wax: gum Arabic is used to help all the ingredients stick together and they get theirs from the branches of the acacia tree. Carnauba wax comes from the Brazilian wax palm (vegan friendly) and is used to coat their chewing gum.
Gum base: this is the chewy base for their gum and they use a mix of natural and manmade rubbers.
Peppersmith products are sugar free and low calorie: A whole packet of Peppersmith mints are only 36 calories. Xylitol has a low GI of 7 so they are suitable for diabetics. NO ASPARTAME.NOT NOW NOT EVER!
Peppersmith is backed by the ‘Oral Health Foundation’ and were ‘approved’ under their accreditation programme in 2013 and then in 2023 they have become sponsor of ‘National Smile Month’. (This will be 13th May to 13th June 2024) and will be raising awareness of oral health issues. The theme being ‘Love your Smile’. They are also approved by the European Food Safety Authority. Peppersmith are so confident in their claims that they offer it to dentists to promote in their practices. Peppersmith recommend their product should be used after snacks and food (up to five times a day) and are suitable for age 3 upwards.
In my review I had mixed opinions from them being ‘tasty’ to not lasting very long. The price was also mentioned as there are lots of mints and gum out there much cheaper, however there was resounding support for the fact that they have no aspartame or palm oil and they are promoted as healthy for teeth. A definite winner for everyone who tried them. I found the packaging a little difficult to get into but really appreciate that Peppersmith use no additional plastic and therefore have a box that will not open before you are ready to eat them. I also found that the gum did not fill you full of ‘wind’, as others do, and there was no ‘after taste.
