A very welcome addition to this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, A Street in Palermo (Via Castellana Bandiera) is a beautifully crafted and observed tale of friendship and frustration, understanding and misunderstanding.

The premise doesn’t exactly sound auspicious: two cars travelling in opposite directions along a narrow street followed by a lengthy stand-off over who’s going to back down and back up.

But soon we see the layers that lie beneath this apparently banal scene, as we discover more about what’s driving the obstinacy of those behind the wheel.

A friendly, funny take on the lives and loves of a group of characters who embody the spirit of Sicily, for good and bad. And a tantalising promise of pleasures to come at the Italian Film Festival, currently running in Glasgow until 20 March 2014.

Rating: 4/5
