The Copper Clothing Company is developing products to change the way we cope with antibiotic resistance in order to help tackle future pandemics with their non drug non invasive antimicrobial items. They are working in partnership with the NHS and leading international institution in order to do this.
The towel arrived from the supplier in a brown paper outer wrapping and in a plastic bag inside. The towel measures 125cm x 70cm and it is a lovely graphite grey colour. The material is 100% cotton which has been infused with copper ions to make it anti fungal and anti bacterial, anti microbial and anti odour. The Copper Clothing website says ‘The copper ions integrated within the fibres of our gym/bath towel destroy all pathogenic microbes upon contact and protect the towel further from germs that can cause foul smells and breed illnesses.’
Before using it I washed the towel as per the instructions which is on a low heat 30-40c and tumbled dry on a low heat. The instructions also say not to use bleach or iron. Washing fluffed up the fibres of the towel and made it feel much thicker and softer. Once washed I used the towel as normal and found it to be very soft and absorbent when drying my body and it dried out quickly after I had used it. For everyday use at home I prefer a larger bath sheet to dry myself on, however, with its ‘super powers’ this towel would be great for sports players to use as its properties will prevent it from becoming smelly. Another fantastic use would be for camping or caravanning when it can be difficult to get things dry. The Copper Clothing website says ‘Self-sustainable: With the help of copper ions, this gym towel naturally cleans itself and destroys bacteria like E. coli, S. Aureus, and MRSA by 99.99%, reducing the need to wash it often. This helps you to do your part in saving water and the planet!’
For me the good points about this towel are just how quickly it absorbs moisture and dries out after use. Interestingly the promotional material says that studies have shown that copper contains elements that could help reduce wrinkles and fine lines and promote skin elasticity. This is amazing and if true I would use the towel, every day!
I do have some reservations on the suggested infrequency of washing although it is perhaps more environmentally friendly not to wash towel as frequently as I am used to doing, I would feel uncomfortable not washing regularly. I find the price is expensive for a towel although less so if used as recommended as it will save on water, washing detergent and energy which are all good for the environment.
If you have a sports player/athlete in your family, who likes to try out alternative or unique things, this could make a practical, interesting and unusual Christmas gift particularly if the recipient is keen to be more environmentally friendly.
