Deadly Sticker Book by Steve Backshall Review

Reviewed by Nicola McCallum

With three little boys who are all fans of the TV show Deadly 60 I was looking forward to reviewing this sticker book. As soon as the boys first saw the book they knew exactly what it was. With its bright yellow and green cover with a picture of Steve Backshall on the front there is no mistaking the content of this book.

The sticker book is split into different categories fastest, super senses, mass attack, toxic, airborne, fiercest, lethal weapons, extreme, defenders and killer tactics. Each section will give you a brief description of the category and contains between 6 and 8 animals for each double page spread. There is then a mix of names of the animals which are part of the section half of these have their picture printed on the page and the other half involves looking at the centre sticker pages, finding the sticker of the animals named then sticking it in the page. To help with some of the less well known animals each sticker does have the name of the animal next to it.

While my youngest two children enjoyed sticking the stickers in the book and were more than contented with this I found this was not enough for my 5 year old. With every sticker that was stuck in the book he had a question, while I was able to answer some of his questions there were others I was not able to answer.  We had stuck a few stickers in the book before we discovered a small fact page giving a brief description of the animal and its trait. But I found this did not cover every animal in the book. While I was able to explain how a king Cobra was toxic I was less confident in explaining what was special about a Tarsier.

When the novelty wore off and most of the stickers had been stuck in the book there was not much interest from my boys and the book was a little discarded, if this book contained more information each animal then I know this book would become a book read at bed time or would become useful for school and nursery topics.

I was also disappointed by the lack of stickers. While advertised on the front of this book “over 200 stickers” only 50 of these were of featured animals and the rest were little Deadly logos. All of the main featured stickers were also required to fill up the sticker book and it would be nice to have some extra animal stickers as many of the sticker books that are on the market today do have extra stickers which have been used to decorate school books and pictures.

While this book was enjoyed by my children I as a parent was disappointed by this sticker book. With a RRP of £4.99 I do not believe this is value for money as there are other sticker books out there that contain a lot more stickers for the same price. While the idea of a Deadly book works it seems that not a lot of thought has been put into this book and the content is very poor. While this is not for children under 3, I think the content is for 3-5 year old which does not match the content or the target market for the television show.

Overall I am disappointed to give this book 2 out 5, with the only plus points being my children enjoyed sticking the stickers in and looking at all the different animals.
