As a self-confessed Disney lover and also a huge fan of anything creative, I was excited to receive a sample of the Disney Princess crystal art set to try out with my niece. The version we received was The Little Mermaid notebook kit which has a retail value of £12.99. This crystal art set (sometimes described as diamond painting due to the fact you create an image using sparkling crystals) has an age guidance of 8+ which I felt was appropriate. Anyone younger may have trouble with the dexterity of handling the tiny pieces or the hand eye coordination to get the accuracy needed for a decent image. Adult guidance was needed to explain how to use the kit, but once my niece got the hang of it she needed very little support.

The notebook kit comes in a brightly coloured cardboard box which contains a handy image of the finished piece. Inside was a 26 x 18cm 50 page lined notebook, plus all the items needed to decorate it. These included plastic bags containing different sizes of crystal ( 2 sizes in this set), a plastic tray for sorting the crystals and an easy grip tool used to move the crystals – described as a handy pick up pen.

The image on the front of the notebook was of the Little Mermaid Ariel and some of the other creatures from the film. This is an official Disney licenced kit so the quality was very good. Covering the image was a protective clear sheet which I peeled off in sections to reveal a sticky layer on which to place the crystals. The tinier crystals were picked up using the tool however there were some larger crystals which needed to be picked up by hand. The dots on the image correspond to the different crystals so it is very easy to follow. The crystals fix instantly and seemed very secure even after a day or two of handling.

The instructions included in the kit were very basic but told you as much as you needed to know. The idea is to match the coloured crystals to the image on the front of the notebook and eventually end up with a sparkling design. I helped my niece a little and found the activity therapeutic and relaxing. She said it was great fun and couldn’t wait to take the notebook to school to show her friends.

The crystal art kit kept us busy for around 2 hours and my niece was left with an object to be proud of. For this reason, I would certainly say that the kit is good value for money. There are many other designs incorporating favourite Disney characters such as Moana, Beauty and the Beast and Winnie the Pooh. They come in different versions such as cards starting at £5.99 up to large 90 x 65cm kits which retail at £69.99. These would definitely be aimed at adult crafters due to the more complex nature of their design.

Overall I would say the Disney Crystal Art sets are fantastic fun and simple to use while creating a visually impressive design giving them a rating of 5/5.
