I love the idea of messy play but I hate the idea of the mess so it’s one play type my son hasn’t had much opportunity for at home. He is very good at accidentally pushing anything that will make a mess off his little table or off the kitchen counter, leaving me with more mess than I intended to need to clean up. A proper messy play table had made it onto my Christmas wish list this year as I am finding my son is now much more aware of, and wanting to play with, messy things such as paints and crafts, sand and water but I really have not enjoyed trying to keep it in one place or clean up any of my attempts at letting him have messy fun.

The Toyrific play tray activity table is described as versatile for indoor or outdoor play, and perfect for sensory play, crafts or even snack time. It’s 95cm long by 53cm wide so is a really good size to allow proper space for play and exploring by one child or even for two or three children to play together. Its legs can be adjusted to three height settings meaning it grows with your child or making it suitable for different aged children to play at different times. The highest setting of 63cm is likely high enough to make it out of reach for a younger toddler whilst allowing an older child to play with small toys or messy things without being banished as a danger to the younger child.

The play tray itself has a raised edge approximately 6cm higher than the surface which helps keep the contents on the table. There is also a handy pouring corner to make tidy up time slightly easier, though as I found out not all contents will slide nicely to that corner before spilling all over the floor, quinoa has a mind of its own! Beware if you have a child like mine though who fills his skip and bulldozer vehicles with the sand or quinoa and drives them all around the living room floor rather than keeping them on the table. Luckily he also loves to hoover so if it’s dry and simply needs to be hoovered up he has given himself another activity he enjoys.

The frame is metal and joins together into one solid piece that the food grade plastic tray sits on. There are no pointy corners, it’s all smooth and rounded and the legs have rubber feet to protect flooring. It’s really easy to pick up and move and has been designed to fit through most doors so is really portable. I am already looking forward to taking it outside in the summer without having to leave it out there exposed to the elements overnight. The play tray lifts off so it’s possible to set it directly on the floor or on another table for playtime instead of on its frame, great if you don’t have enough space to easily fit the frame in your room. The frame can also be taken apart again so it is possible to put it completely away between play sessions too which is great if you don’t want its surface to be available all the time. So far I’ve kept it out as even normal toys can be untidy play and it’s a great spot for setting out his Lego Duplo, wooden building blocks or magnetic tiles on and does stop some of it getting lost under the sofa.

The tray is made from food grade plastic so I can be sure it’s safe to play with food on or even to eat food off. My little boy loves to help in the kitchen but I’d prefer he wasn’t standing on my stool or a chair to reach the counters. My aim is that next time I’m letting him chop or mix, measure or weigh we will be utilising this play tray. It’s a better height for him to stand at than his child sized table is and the raised edges will be much better for keeping ingredients off the floor.

The only thing that would make this play tray table better, in my opinion, is if the frame could be folded in on itself somehow without having to take it apart as this would make it easier to tuck away. I’d definitely be grateful to receive this as a Christmas gift. It’s one of those things you don’t necessarily realise you need until you have it and it really is so versatile it has a million uses, including as a coffee table when the kids are in bed!
