My daughter is about to turn 9, her birthday wish list consists of things relating to dogs, craft marshmallows. This review has given her one of those three things early, which she is very pleased about.

The Style 4 Ever Magic Clay Jewellery Maker comes in a very vibrant box, you can clearly see from the box what you are going to be able to do, make jewellery and fairly fast too, with the aid of the ‘magic’ oven. As well as pictures of what you can make on the box, there are pictures of what is included in the box and small snippets of how the items are used to make your jewellery items.

When you open the box, it is really nice to see that there is no construction, or at least any construction that needs to be completed – slotting the parts together – can be done by an 8 year old. You will need to lend a hand to insert the batteries, 4 AAA, not included in the box, so do make sure you buy these or have some on hand. All of the parts are plastic, but decent quality and not flimsy and all come in plastic wrap.

The main parts included in the box are the oven, roller and storage rack side. Also included are cutters, there are meant to be 4 different ones, a heart, butterfly, circle and flower – in our box we had two circles and no heart. There is gold and silver foil, black and pink elastic, a cutting tool, with an area to emboss, a clay working tool, transfers, beads, an instruction sheet, some handy pictorial instruction sheets and the all-important clay in 5 different colours.

The clay is sealed in foil pouches, these have a tear strip on the top and open fairly easily, the clay is well packed in the pouches and they reseal when you are finished so you can use them another day. The clay breaks off easily and is very supple, it does however stretch really easily.

When it comes to starting to make your clay creations you can pinch clay out from the pouch/s of your choosing and get to work. We decided to try the gradient and make something first off with a pink, purple and blue, we may have started off a little difficult for our first project but why walk when you can run!

We trialled lots of techniques and made a few beads, some flowers, a butterfly, a ring and made a twisted bracelet. It is worth noting that when you use the clay you need to be careful with your creations as they can stretch or distort easily, so carefully lift them or handle them or you may end up with a bracelet that can be used by your dad or a ring for a giant.

Once you have made your creation you put them into the oven, this bakes the clay in just 3 minutes so that your creations are ready to be made into a bracelet, necklace or anything else almost immediately. The oven is only small so you can fit a small bracelet, or a few beads, a flower or two or a little design. You will need to fit all of these onto the tray that slides in and be careful when you put it on, make sure to shape your clay the way you want it to come out as once it is baked there is no softening it to remake or reshape. Once you have removed your item from the oven it is set and much harder, do be careful with your items though as they can break or crack. Although this will give you a great excuse to practise and make more.

This set was great fun, my daughter and I really enjoyed getting creative together and making a variety of things for others and herself. The possibilities are endless and there is so much variety with the extra accessories included too. The speed that things are dried and ready to use is impressive and it works really well for an impatient one that doesn’t like to wait to be able to make and complete things.
If you are looking for a Christmas gift for a little one that loves to craft and make things this would be an ideal gift.
