Last night What’s Good To Do have been taken into the plains of Africa to follow the journey of Simba in the Lion King – the stage version of the classic Disney Movie.
The Lion King tells a story of a young lion cub, Simba, who is destined to be king one day and in charge of his kingdom – anything the light touches from his view on top of Pride Rock, along with his betrothed Nala. Things however take a tragic turn when Simba’s jealous uncle sets out to become King killing Simba’s father and instructing Simba to run away. Pride rock soon spirals down into a ruined land leading Nala to run away in search for help. During this search she is reunited with Simba, leading him back to fight for his birth right as King.
Act 1 burst into song with the circle of life. This is when all the animals come to life and dance their way down the aisles and onto the stage. The costumes are absolutely amazing they are totally indescribable. You find yourself captivated and mesmerised by them with the elephant being particularly brilliant. Throughout the whole show the costumes make the play – the imagination and creation behind them is shear brilliance the costumes are cleverly designed so you see both the costumes but also the actors behind the costumes.
Act 2 shows more interaction involving Timon and Pumbaa played by Dominic Brewer and Lee Ormsby respectively. This double act is hilarious and definitely in keeping with the original Disney film.
The whole stage production is fantastic the part when the herd of wildebeest are stampeding and both Simba and his father are unfortunately caught in the stamp is very clever and powerful. The use varying sizes of wildebeest give a great depth to the scene.
The star of the show for me was Christopher Colquhoun aka Scar – his voice, movements as well as his evil laugh all make for a brilliant character. The stand out scene was the ‘Be Prepared song’ with the hyenas playing an integral part into making this song.
Overall, this is one of the best shows you will ever see – a feel good movie and a definite must for all ages.
