Some Guys Have All The Luck is the story of Rod Stewart, and having grown up with his music I was really looking forward to the show. My husband and I were seeing the performance at the Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells where we love seeing shows as not only does it have a large car park right next door with all night parking only £1.00, it has a well-stocked bar with ice creams and snacks and recently refurbished auditorium with comfortable seating.
Paul Metcalfe stars as Rod Stewart in a show that is split in two halves. In the first half, Paul tells the story of Rod Stewart’s rise to fame brought to life with a backdrop of fabulous photographs and press clippings of Rod in the 60’s and 70’s. The songs are from the early part of his career with great tunes such as Handbags and Gladrags, You Wear It Well and my personal favourite Broken Dreams. In my opinion a song that’s never played enough on the radio.
The second half its much more concert style starting fast with Hot Legs, comes back down with First Cut is the Deepest and Sailing and then ramps right up again with Do Ya Think I’m Sexy. Filled with plenty of hits in between such as Tonight’s the Night and You’re in My Heart you can’t help to get up and dance. After a rousing audience request for an encore the 4 piece band were back on with I Don’t Want To Talk About it and finally played Maggie May, the one the crowd had been waiting for.
Whilst Paul Metcalfe performs brilliantly as Rod I must give credit to the excellent band especially the lead guitarist who was absolutely fantastic and took centre stage several times. This show is a must see if you love Rod Stewart, it will have you digging out your old vinyl and reliving the performance for days afterwards. A fab night out.
