Beauty and the Beast at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

1 December 2018 to 20 January 2019

For the first time in over 70 years, Beauty and the Beast was the tale of choice for this year’s Christmas Pantomime. A what a Pantomime it was!

Allan Stewart, Grant Stott and cast did a fantastic job in bringing the old Disney favourite to live in true Christmas panto style. Andy Gray was unfortunately missing from the usual comic trio line up this year which I think made a difference especially for the younger audience but the double act did well in delivering that traditional slap stick banter that makes the Edinburgh Christmas panto so legendary. With Allan Stewart as Mrs Potty and Grant Stott as Flash Boaby what could possibly go wrong, or is that right!

Although perhaps not the easiest of tales to adapt to panto, with the up to date music and dancing to keep the kids entertained and the vast amount of relevant and current jokes and references for the adults, everyone seemed to be having fun. The audience participation especially from some of the kids was fantastic. And as always, the costumes and stage setting were magical.

The King’s was the perfect venue for my festive family night out. It is a small traditional theatre with a very welcoming warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Located in the heart of Edinburgh City Centre it is easily accessible by public transport but also has plenty of parking close by. And has a wide range of bars and restaurants surrounding it for pre-and post-theatre drinks and food.

My family and I had a great night watching the legendary pair get up to their old panto tricks. I would recommend the show to the all audiences – young and old, families, couples or friends – there is something for everyone. A very merry four stars out of five for this Christmas cracker of a panto!
