Shrek The Musical at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review
25 September to 6 October 2018

Dreamworks Shrek The Musical opened in Glasgow to a full house. The young audience was captivated from start to finish with the colourful scenery, vibrant costumes, song, dance and puppetry.
After being sent away from home on his 7th birthday, Shrek the Ogre makes his home in the swamp. He lived there in peace until Lord Farquaad rehomed fairy-tale characters (such as the Three Bears, the Wicked Witch, Pinocchio, the Big Bad Wolf and Peter Pan) to the swamp in an attempt to rid his kingdom, the Kingdom of Duloc, of these fairy-tale freaks.
To win his swamp back, Shrek, with Donkey’s assistance, embarks on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona from the tower to be Lord Farquaad’s bride.
Marcus Ayton stole the show for us as Donkey with his flamboyant personality and cheeky character. Steffan Harri carried the role of Shrek proficiently, complete with Scottish accent. Amelia Lily embraced the character of Princess Fiona while Samuel Holmes was hilarious as Lord Farquaad.
The humour in Shrek is on many levels – the kids in the audience loved he toilet humour but there was plenty of adult humour and innuendos, especially from Lord Farquaad!
Shrek has a fantastic musical score played by the orchestra, led by Colm O’Regan. The many catchy numbers include Big Bright Beautiful World, I Know It’s Today, Freak Flag and the closing number I’m a Believer.
Directed by Nigel Harman, Shrek The Musical plays at the King’s Theatre until Saturday 6th October.
The King’s Theatre is situated on Bath Street in the city centre. It is well serviced with public transport and is within walking distance of both bus and train stations. There is on-street parking in the vicinity as well.
The theatre is traditional in style set over three levels. We were seated in the grand circle where the visibility was excellent.
