Sherlock Holmes The Definitive Furies Collection Review

Reviewed by Tracey Flintham

Pennie Mae Cartawick has produced a series of short stories which cover the further adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. This edition, “Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Furies Collection” was delivered as an e-book (mobi format) which was easily transferred to my e-reader. The e-book contains cover illustrations and also some chapter artwork throughout which help in breaking up large chunks of text. Overall the e-book is well formatted with a good layout and a professional feel.

This e-book contains twenty short stories, which have been previously released individually, in a single collection. These stories are set in a variety of locations around the world of the late nineteenth century, both in Britain and further afield. The writing style is reminiscent of Doyle’s, although the nature of the short story format does mean that the wealth of description and detail from the original works is somewhat lacking.

Each short story builds well, however there is a definite feel that the ending is rushed and more could be made of the denouement and Holmes’ conclusions. There are several grammatical and spelling errors throughout the story and whilst they do not strictly speaking detract from the overall text they do at times break the flow of reading and the use of a good proof reader prior to publication would have served this collection well.

For casual fans of Sherlock Holmes this collection contains several stories that may pique their interest, whilst for those who are uninitiated with Holmes and Watson and would like a short taste of their world, this collection is an easy introduction before embarking on one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s masterpieces.
