It’s that time of year again. The nights are drawing in and there’s a distinct chill in the air. The turning trees, and crunch of autumn leaves underfoot, brings the distinct need to cosy up by the fire with something warm and inviting. Whatever your usual choice of tipple, Shanky’s Whip Whiskey Liqueur will hit that spot.
For those unfamiliar with Shanky’s, known as ‘Always one to buck the trend’, this Irish Whisky Liqueur was created as an alternative to your standard whiskey liqueurs. While your average whiskey liqueur packs a powerful punch, Shanky wasn’t a fan of the burn, nor the texture of cream (like alternatives such as Bailey’s or Irish cream liqueurs), but he did like stout, so therein was born Shanky’s Whip – a wonderful combination of black Irish whiskey, vanilla and cream. Sounds intriguing, right?
Relatively new to market, this delectable tipple hails from County Cavan in the heart of Ireland. With a distinct vintage style label, complete with a slightly hilarious visual of a man racing an ostrich, it is instantly recognisable. A heavy, debossed branded bottle completes the quality look. It would look at home next to the usual whiskey suspects on shop shelves and would be a fabulous addition to any bar or drinks cabinet.
Being a fan of whiskey, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. It has the classic whiskey smell, without the fire and is rounded off with a hint of vanilla. At first taste, if I closed my eyes, I could swear I was drinking something akin to Bailey’s – if Bailey’s had more alcoholic oomph to it! It was sweet, rich, creamy and incredibly smooth, like a dessert in a glass. It’s also incredibly moreish. The sweetness might put the more old-school whiskey drinkers off, but as a liqueur, it really held its own and was super tasty.
It would also be at home in many a cocktail. Whether you’re just out to enjoy a Shanky’s Whip with Cola (the brilliantly named ‘The Long and Short of it’), it also wouldn’t be out of place in an ‘Irish’ Old Fashioned or alongside some Frangelico in a ‘Nutter’ shot. The Shanky’s Whip website – https://www.shankyswhip.com/ – has plenty of suggestions too, all of which I’m looking forward to working my way through!
At £24 RRP for a 70cl bottle (there’s actually a promotion on Amazon at the moment too – it’s only £22.99), it won’t break the bank, and would make the ideal gift this Christmas for the Whiskey – or Whisky – lover in your life. Your uncle could ‘Irish up’ his morning cup of joe. Your dad could relax in his armchair with a Shanky’s in his pint of stout, and your alco-pop loving brother could enhance his drinking reputation with a swanky Shanky’s Whip on the rocks. It’s the perfect, versatile liqueur!
So, whether you’re looking for the perfect whiskey related gift, or a cheeky bottle for yourself, Shanky’s hits the spot.
Warm up this Christmas with some Shanky’s Whip Whiskey Liqueur.
