Modibodi New Teen Back To School Capsule Collection Review

I have recently been introduced to Modibodi period-wear and I am a real fan, so I was delighted to be able to try out the new teenage range with my 11-year-old daughter. She started her period at quite a young age and is not a fan of wearing pads or how they feel at all; she worries about bedtime leaks and holds herself back during her sporting activities for the same reason. She had very high hopes for these products.

We were delighted to receive a pair of hipster boyshorts, hipster bikini pants as well as a pack of two teen racerback crop tops which are also part of the teen range.

The hipster boyshorts come in a range of colours and designs, but we were particularly pleased to receive the busy bee yellow design with a bright blue waistband. It is a gorgeous design targeted at older girls perfectly. My daughter wouldn’t usually use this style of underwear as she prefers briefs, but we both agreed that boyshorts could potentially give her confidence when sleeping and during her martial arts class so we focused on using them during these times purely for her own comfort and preference.

In terms of fit, she would usually wear clothes in age 13-14, or ladies size 8 pants so we tried the youth age 12-14 boyshorts which fit her comfortably. The inside of the pants has the thick black absorbent layer which extends upwards around the back for full coverage, and hopefully no noticeable staining.

The boyshorts have maxi leak coverage for a 50ml flow which is equivalent to 10 tampons. These are designed for very heavy flow or overnight protection and even frequent bladder leaks which may be useful for some teens. They will absorb period, pee and sweat for dryness and odour control, according to the website. Washing the pants before use will activate “the magic powers”. My daughter found the shorts comfortable, and much lighter and less bulky than when wearing a pad. However during the night she did feel a little sweaty which I suspect is due to her preference for briefs. When she woke up she complained of feeling wet, and it did appear that some hadn’t absorbed fully into the padding which would explain the damp feeling.

She also found that there was significant leakage around the inside of her upper thighs, and whilst this had stained the non-padded portion of the pants it had not stained the bed sheets. This was quite disappointing and did give her confidence a knock, and would suggest that the fit is not tight enough around the padded area for night-time use or there is some other design fault.

With this in mind, she is reluctant to wear these in bed and would prefer them during the day when she can keep a regular check, and whilst she is upright to allow the blood to perhaps soak in better. These pants are priced at £25 which I would be happy to pay had they been perfect and contained the blood within the padding during the night. Scoring these pants alone, we decided that 3/5 stars would be fair as they are really more of a day-use product based on our experience.

The hipster briefs arrived in flamingo green and (wow) my daughter loves them! Again, the design is perfect for this age group although many other options are available.

We opted for the same size as the boyshorts, but really wish we had gone a size up to the age 14-16 option as they looked slightly too low down at the front for full coverage. My daughter felt that the black absorbent portion needed to come a little higher up the front of her body, and we believe this is purely due to sizing so would advise you to consider this when choosing the best size for your teen; if she is borderline on the sizing then I would suggest you go up a size.

For this reason she didn’t want to wear them in bed, but felt confident during moderate flow days. These pants are designed for moderate to heavy flow, which is 15ml or 2-3 tampons.

They look like normal pants which is great when getting changed at school, and she felt so much more comfortable than when wearing the pad as the absorbent lining is super slim and (in her words) you don’t have the creaking sound and movement which comes with a pad. She was unaware of feeling damp or there being a smell, and we had no leaks so this design was a real confidence boost for her. I plan to buy more of these in the next size up. These are priced at £19.50 a pair which, when compared with the inferior quality of some of the cheaper brands, seems very fair on balance.  Ignoring the size issue, we would give these pants an individual score of 5/5 stars.

General washing was easy, we just rinsed them under the tap or with the shower hose after wearing until the water ran clear, then washed them in the machine on a low temperature.  These pants are a great alternative to disposable pads, for both environmental and comfort reasons, and in theory financially as well.

The racerback crop tops came in white and pale pink, and are really lovely items. The material is soft and thick with an elasticated band for support. These were a real hit with my daughter. The youth size 12-14 were a great fit and they washed well. She forgets that she is wearing them as they are so comfortable, and this is not the case with other brands that we have tried. Scoring these alone, they have to be awarded 5/5 stars; yes, you can buy crop tops very easily from a supermarket but the difference in quality and durability is very obvious.

We really loved the Modibodi website as you can view the underwear on different sized bodies and it was so easy to navigate. A swim range is also available.

We decided to award the three products 4.5/5 stars as a whole.
