Molton Brown Chester Review

Reviewed by Linzi Davies

I didn’t really know what to expect with this one, I went along with a fellow reviewer and good friend, Louise Turton to help her local Molton Brown store celebrate a special birthday. We decided to take our daughters along with us and treat them to a bite to eat first. We popped into the store and spoke with Wayne who was looking very dapper indeed in his tuxedo. On his recommendation we tried a fabulous restaurant only a couple of doors away before returning to peruse the shops offerings and have a listen to The Mersey Belles.

The shop is very light and airy with a clinical but welcoming feeling. The shelves were filled with a vast array of liquids and potions to treat yourself to a wonderful pamper. I didn’t realise that the range from products was quite so extensive, from shampoo and body wash to high end candles and anti-fatigue eye gel. There were a wide range of testers which both ourselves and the girls enjoyed smelling and rubbing onto our hands before trying to guess the smells. The store even had a hand wash basin so you could wash off and start again with a fresh and feisty concoction. My particular favourite was the limited edition Caju & Lime range which was a gorgeous citrus airy smell which awakened the senses and instantly made me feel as though I dancing on a Brazilian beach in the dazzling sunshine. The products are pricey but as with most things, quality costs and therefore I would imagine that all of the products available offer fantastic value for money. We were given a gift bag each containing a variety of body washes to try at home. One of those is not even on general sale until the 1st of October so I won’t reveal too much!

Onto the entertainment, The Mersey Belles, in the words of our daughters they were “Epic” Nancy and Pearl offered a variety of cheeky chirpy songs to appeal to the most eclectic of listeners. The Ukulele playing duo, were fun, confident and both very talented singers and musicians. They even invited the girls to join in their performance by playing a tiny ukulele that they provided which provided much laughter and frivolity. We sat and listened for the full hour’s performance and really enjoyed their vintage era display. The twosome were even more delighted when the girls asked for autographs and selfies.

The staff, Wayne and his female partner whose name I didn’t catch did an excellent job of keeping everybody’s glasses filled with prosecco, soft drinks or tea for the drivers amongst us. The popcorn and sweets was also a huge hit with the younger guests. The professionalism and approachability of the staff endeared me to the store and we are looking forward to re attending in early October to enjoy our complimentary treatment.

Excellent evening. Thanks again

On September 5th I travelled into Chester with a friend and our two daughters to celebrate the 10th birthday of the Molton Brown shop. We went in early as had decided to make an afternoon of the trip and enjoy some lunch beforehand, then go to the store in time to see the Mersey Belles who were due to be performing at 6.

We located the store and popped our heads in to explain who we were and our plans, to be met by Wayne, a staff member, who was so friendly and approachable, he even recommended somewhere we could eat (Missoula – a fantastic recommendation, thank you Wayne) and said he would look forward to our return later when our gift bags would be ready.

A little while later we arrived back at the store very full and content to be warmly welcomed, we were informed that the Mersey Belles would shortly be arriving and were given a complimentary drink, prosecco for myself, tea for my friend – designated driver! and soft drinks for the girls. There was also popcorn and sweets available, a nice touch that the girls certainly enjoyed, and we were left to explore the many lotions, perfumes, body washes, candles etc… that Molton Brown has to offer. There is a huge range of scents available so there is sure to be something to everyone’s tastes, and it was lovely to explore all that was available in such a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere.

My friend and I were both given a gift bag which contained 3 travel-sized body washes in 3 different fragrances, plus the girls also received a little bag with their own body wash. As you can imagine they were thrilled and a lovely touch. We also received a voucher for a complimentary treatment for another time which we have already booked and are already looking forward to.

At 6, as promised the Mersey Belles began to perform in the shop. The shop began to fill and took on a party atmosphere, our drinks were refilled and we settled down to enjoy the performance. Our 2 girls are now their biggest fans and were made to feel extremely special by being allowed to participate in the show, even collecting autographs at the end!

A fantastic end to a lovely afternoon.

We were going to Molton Brown in Chester. Getting to Chester City Centre is relatively easy enough, well sign posted all along M56/M53 motorways. Most of the parking is just on the outskirts of the city centre, but even so it’s only a couple minutes walk to the famous city walls and all the shops, bars and restaurants as well as the fabulous historic sites. If you arrive after 3pm then it’s free in all car parks which is a bonus.

The store is very well laid out, meaning you have plenty of room to walk around and browse the vast array of products. Shelving was situated around the walls with only 2 central displays units. The display cases were all well lit and were not overstocked with items.

Products were easy to see and distinguish as they were displayed well and the complete range of products was displayed all together, this made choosing complimentary items much easier. Samples were also available along with a sink and hand towels so you could try more than one product or fragrance. Price lists and a detailed product description which gave an insight as to the background of the fragrance range were well displayed on each shelf. Not only is there a full range of beauty products for both women and men there is also a complimentary home range consisting of scented candles and diffuser sticks was also available.

I did feel thought that the music in store was too loud and not in keeping with the luxury home spa experience the store is selling you. I also did think that as nice as the products I tried were, they were very expensive.

I would shop here again, but more likely to purchase a gift rather than something for my own personal use.

I would have to rate it 3.5 out 5 stars simply due to the high prices.
