I was ecstatic when I was asked to review the John Adams Rubiks Cube 3×3. This brought back many fond memories of trying to complete the Rubik’s Cube as a child when at my Grandma’s house. It was an activity that would do together and we must have spent hundreds of hours trying to complete over the years, but never succeed. I remember asking why some of the coloured stickers looked like they had been picked at!

So now it was my turn to introduce the Rubik’s cube to my family. My son was very excited as he had wanted a cube for a while. As soon it arrived he started playing with it.

The cube was exactly how I remembered it but one small change for the better. Each of the coloured squares is now moulded into the cube, instead of a sticker like on the original cube. So no cheating!  My husband told tales of how when he was a child people would peel of the coloured stickers and move them about in order to make their cube completed.

The cube is perfect size, fitting in the palm of my hand. It is well made of sturdy plastic and feels like it will last a long time. Each section smoothly turns when twisted with no clunkiness.   My son particularly liked that the cube has a stand, as it has meant that he could display the cube in his room (have a play with it once he has gone to bed).

We would spend time as a family trying to complete the cube and creating competitions such as first person to get 3 colours in a row but also individually. I’ve really enjoyed picking up the cube and having a quick play in between tasks and to keep my brain challenged. Completing the cube does become very addictive and before you know it 20 minutes have passed.

We have loved that the cube can be played anywhere due to its handy size. We’ve had it in the: house, garden, at a picnic and car. My son even played with it over video calling to his Grandad. This added a new dimension to the enjoyment for the family and now is featured regular in our video calls.

So far we have only managed to complete two sides of the cube, unfortunately. I’m not convinced we will ever complete it and don’t want to look for cheats to complete it. We are persevering to complete it fully.   The Rubiks Cube is great fun and a family must have. We have had hours of fun trying to complete it so far with with many more to come.   The Rubiks Cube has a recommendation of 8+ years. Personally, I think it would be suitable for 6+ years if the child is interested in playing.
