We had the pleasure of attending the performance of “Room on the Broom” at the Lyric Theatre in London. Initially, I was apprehensive about navigating London on a Saturday morning, but my concerns were quickly alleviated. The theatre, located on Shaftesbury Avenue, is just a short three-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus Station. Although the theatre was a bit difficult to find at first due to its shared space with another show, the presence of a queue filled with excited children assured us we were in the right place.
The queue, though busy, was efficiently managed by the theatre staff and there were plenty of them. My daughter, who has additional needs, became quickly overwhelmed by the crowd. I decided to speak to a staff member who was incredibly helpful. She guided us to a side door and ensured we were taken care of by her colleague. His warm and welcoming demeanour made us feel at ease as he escorted us through the building to collect our tickets and then further escorted us to our seats.
Our seats in the middle of the circle row offered an amazing view of the stage, thanks to the tiered seating arrangement. However, the lack of a middle aisle made it somewhat awkward for people to access their seats when navigating their way through already seated families.
“Room on the Broom” is a beloved book and I was concerned that the live performance might not meet expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The production was executed flawlessly, bringing the book to life in a captivating manner. The cast utilized the entire stage, engaging the audience with their performance. We particularly loved ‘helping’ make the broom fly! While the Witch and Cat were portrayed by actors, the other characters were puppets, masterfully manipulated to the point where the puppeteers seemed to disappear.
The show was filled with humour that resonated with both adults and children, keeping us laughing throughout. The five cast members did an outstanding job, making it feel as though there were many more people on stage.
Overall, “Room on the Broom” at the Lyric Theatre is must-see. The combination of excellent production, talented cast, and engaging storytelling makes it a delightful experience for audiences of all ages and is the perfect introduction to the theatre world for younger family members.
I would rate it 5 ‘magical’ Stars.
