For those that don’t know, Pichu is a cute, yellow Pokémon.

He arrived safely in a plastic bag. It was labelled as fragile, but he seems pretty robust to me and says he’s suitable for ages 2 and upwards. Upon opening the bag, I immediately noticed how soft his material is, even though his ‘stuffing’ is quite solid. All his stitching is very neat, and he seems well made if you were thinking of giving him to a child at the younger age of the age recommendation. His tail feels more felt like though, which may not have the same longevity as the rest of him if around very young children or pulled around between more than one child.

Unfortunately, my children saw yellow and thought it was a Pikachu so were a little disappointed when it was a less popular Pokémon. However, they were still happy to fight over who should be the one to get to keep him! In fact, they pulled out their plastic Pokéballs and pretended to *catch* him. My children are having a second wind at playing with Pokémon cards at the moment, so he was a welcome addition to our household, and they all liked him.

Pichu looks a lot like Pikachu in that he is the same colour yellow, with a similar looking face. Body wise he looks like a slimmed down Pikachu! However, Pichu has different shaped ears which are larger and have much more black. He also has black around his neck and a black tail (please see pictures). His ears make it good for him to play peek-a-boo as they can cover his eyes! He has a very happy, tongue out expression, which is similar to Pikachu’s.

The description online calls him a 20cm plush. However, because of his ears, his total height is actually more like 25cms, so you get a bit more Pokémon for your money with this Pichu.

If giving him to a child close to the recommended minimum of the age of 2, then it’s probably worth noting that there is no mention of Pichu being washable, which could be an issue if he becomes a favoured toy.

He is good value for his size and quality, especially considering he is a popular and in demand brand and this is official Pokémon merchandise. He would make a great Christmas present or stocking filler for a child who likes their Pokémon figures.

As long as your child likes a variety of Pokémon, then this would make a great gift. He is arguably the perfect size for a smaller child to fit under their arm and definitely has both the cute factor and the soft and cuddly factor, especially his floppy ears.

Smyths are showing him as currently out of stock, although they do have a variety of other Pokémon available including Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Yamper at the same size and price! I’m hoping my children don’t decide they’ve ‘Gotta catch ‘em all’ though now they have their first one!

Rating: I rate it 4/5
