Based on the very popular TV series from the 1980’s Only Fools and Horses, Only Fools and Horses The Musical is what can only be described as incredibly clever writing and performing that encapsulates ‘classic comedy gold moments’ taken from years of brilliant writing transported miraculously into one live show. It’s advertised as a feel-good family celebration of traditional working-class London life and it certainly is exactly that, but the whole experience taken straight from the West End is so much more.
As soon as we arrived at the theatre, we were welcomed by the very friendly team at the door and again further inside the venue, the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. Tonight, the role of Del Boy was taken by the very talented understudy and Resident Director/Dance Captain Andrew Bryant who played the role brilliantly, in fact every actor was outstanding. Credit also to the excellent band and ensemble who were all first-class performers. Also, to the production team who delivered a very smooth transition from scene to scene were exceptional.
On arrival, the backdrop of The Nags Head was visible on the stage as soon as we sat in our very comfortable seats. Our view and personal space were good and as we surveyed the theatre, everyone appeared to have a very good view. Not only the backdrop ready for the start of the show was impressive but also was the choice of 80’s music playing to take us right back to the day as we took our seats. As the performers came on stage, the costume choices and staging fitted in perfectly to the era we were all transported back to.
We did wonder if we would see the iconic car, but we didn’t have too long to get the answer to that! There were numerous flashbacks to the TV shows which were great to see played out so well, one being a chandelier scene and one was a hilarious bar scene with Del Boy which would have brought back memories for some! Del’s ‘mixed up’ use of European languages was also incredibly funny and well written. That being said, even if you had never watched an episode, it is quite honestly one of the funniest, most talented live shows you could choose to watch. I can honestly say as a limited viewer of the actual TV series at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and was totally entertained.
The venue itself was very clean and well presented with excellent facilities. There were bars available to purchase refreshments and even an option to order to your seat. There was also a restaurant offering pizzas so there isn’t a need to venture away from the theatre during a visit. However, it is located in popular Centre MK, which is a hub of shops and restaurants and close to the train station and other transport links. Parking is also available nearby.
In terms of accessibility the theatre caters well in terms of provision with separate access to areas without stairs. In addition, there are Audio Described and Captioned performances available.
