We attended Milton Keynes Theatre last night to watch the brand new musical On Your Feet: The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan. The theatre has good surrounding parking and plenty of restaurants and bars should you want a pre-show meal or drink. Collection of tickets from the box office was swift and we were soon taking to our seats. There was mostly definitely a buzz amongst the audience which varied greatly in age, surely some of these youngsters were too young to remember this superstar of the 80s!
What an energetic start we were treated to, the Latin American dancing with the music pulsating, who couldn’t get carried away with amazing atmosphere they created. Lots of eye candy ladies! Lots of very handsome gentleman swinging their hips in only a way that a Latin American can, the super hot George Loannides led the way as Emilio Estefan, boy I could have mopped his sweaty brow! I guess like many a superstar, there is quite often an astonishing backstory to their success. Not one to spoil a story, I had no idea of the struggle these two stars had to get their music heard. Through sheer determination they bought their music to the public and eventually enjoyed much success.
As two Cuban immigrants it was no easy path to stardom, in fact quite the opposite, and just when they thought they had it all, life cruelly stepped in and tested them to the limit. Much admiration to understudy Francesca Lara Gordon who stepped in as Gloria tonight, she was amazing. Fantastic voice, she looked completely at ease and was a joy to watch. She commanded the stage for sure.
The whole cast were brilliant dancers, the set at times although the concept simple, was breath-taking. The simple backdrop just led your imagination and complemented the outfits of the dancers, the costumes throughout especially for Gloria were very reminiscent of the era. I thought at one point I was dancing seductively under the setting sun far far away. I loved the fireworks and Emilio and Gloria under the stars and a fairy lit tree. You often found yourself lost in the rhythm of the music, which of course we all know their standout tunes. Loved Anything for You, Dr Beat, Don’t Wanna Lose You and of course Rhythm is Gonna Get You amongst many many others.
Lastly the band deserve a special mention, what an amazing set of musicians, brilliant, they played out the end of the show with a great finale. This is a fantastic musical, you should catch it before it leaves Milton Keynes, there’s no doubt about it you can’t help the rhythm getting you, a great energetic show, which at times was so poignant. Really enjoyed it huge well done to everyone on stage tonight, get On Your Feet and go book a ticket now.
