This playset is part of the Melissa & Doug “Lets Explore” range to encourage children to enjoy the outdoors and learn about nature. It comes with a good backpack to keep and carry all of the items that come with it. The backpack has adjustable straps so would be suitable for children aged 3 – 6 and has lots of pockets. Items included are play suncream, first aid kit, granola bar and compass / saw / ruler. There are working binoculars, a water bottle, whistle, animal footprint examples, a pencil and a card to mark when you find animal prints and to tick off that you have all the necessary items when going hiking.
I have 3 grandchildren who all looked at all the things included in this item. My 8 year old granddaughter was not really interested – a little too old I think. My 3 year old grandson looked at all of the items, was very interested, especially in the binoculars and the whistle – luckily it wasn’t too loud or ear piercing. He loves looking for worms, snails etc so this will encourage the next step of finding other things when we are out and about. Next time we go out for a walk to the park or woods he wants to take it with him to see if he can find the animal prints. My other granddaughter is 18 months old – she spent a lot of time putting the items in and out of the backpack. Her Dad loved it and can’t wait until she is a bit older and able to engage with the pieces and go exploring – she currently loves being outside in the garden watering and looking at plants, so this will encourage her to keep learning about the natural world.
I think that this playset will teach children aged 3 -6 about how to keep safe when going out and about – reminding them about the importance of taking certain things with them – for example bottle of water, sun cream and a first aid kit. They may become keen hikers as they grow up and become teenagers and adults, so these role play toys are great for learning through play. They can use this item both in the garden and when going on walks or on holiday. There is room in the backpack for more items if they want to take other toys or snacks with them.
I have bought a few Melissa & Doug toys for my grandchildren and find that they are always good quality – lasting for all 3 grandchildren, so helping the environment by re using. I’m sure that both of my younger grandchildren will play with this for the next few years and it will still be in good condition for another child to enjoy.
I think the higher price of £45 is a little high for this product although it is available at lower prices.
If it can be used for more than one child it would be worth the cost.
