Northmoor Gin Review

Reviewed by Peter Allen

Being a huge gin fan (and I’m not just jumping on the gin wagon, I’ve been a fan for many years), I was enthralled to be offered the chance to review a bottle of Northmoor Gin, distilled and crafted by Exmoor Distillery Ltd.

When you look in the stores these days, the shelves are filled with the newest drinking craze “GIN”. You will find every flavouring under the sun. Over the last five years I have spent many a night in the local Wetherspoons, who were one of the first to offer the newest gin flavours to hit the market.

I received the bottle of Classic and prepared all my usual ingredients to try them with, obviously for after the first sample. On my initial glimpse of the bottle, the most immediate talking point would be the 44% strength that it offered.

I lit the wood burner and gave it half an hour to warm the room then poured my first sample, on its own – no ice, no tonic. What I can tell you is that the initial hit of spice was tremendous. BOOM!!!! Nothing like a good smooth kick to settle the night in. That first little tongue tippler was like a zap of smelling salts but hitting the inside of your stomach, with a slight smooth burning sensation.

Out with the tonic, and for this particular gin I went with a quality full fat version, cube of ice and a slice of lime. Some of the main flavours I noticed in this gin were citrus and juniper berries, which I believe are handpicked.

I couldn’t tell you what spices they put into Northmoor Gin but they taste awesome together, with the other botanical mixes of angelica root and citrus.

If you order direct from Exmoor you will find it being delivered in fine packaging with a rather unusual air protection system, ensuring the bottle does not get delivered damaged. The design on the bottle is neat and to the point, highlighting the fact that it is “light on the lips” whilst offering the mouth-watering 44% alcohol.

You can order online and they also have Facebook, Twitter and the usual social media sites available for all to browse. So, if you are a gin connoisseur or just enjoy a tipple every now and again, give it a chance. Try it with different tonics. The Northmoor Gin Classic comes in at a premium price of £35 (70cl) and they also offer a Navy Strength version for £45 with a whopping 57% ABV.

If you’re looking for a smaller version you can order this premium Gin in a 35cl bottle for £19.95. Let’s not forget, this company is a UK based, Small Batch Artisan Gin maker. Let’s support our own small companies who obviously have a passion and a super taste to produce such a fine premium bottle of spirit.

As a Gin fan, I would rate the Northmoor Gin with 5 stars. Well done Exmoor Distillery, you have worked wonders in the world of gin. If you are looking for Christmas gift ideas, then this surely has to make it onto your list.
