Last evening (6 June 2018), I attended The Lowry in Manchester to see the Northern Ballet performance of Jane Eyre.
Orphaned at a young age and cruelly treated by her Aunt, Jane Eyre grows up knowing little kindness. She accepts a position as Governess at Thornfield Hall, owned by the mysterious and brooding Mr Rochester. In spite of their social differences, an unlikely bond grows between them but as their romance develops, it becomes clear that Rochester has a hidden past that threatens to ruin them both.
The ballet is a magnificent portrayal of the well-known love story by Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre. It captures the joy and enthusiasm of a child and adds lightness and at times, elements of humour amid the, at times, turbulent plot.
The certainly impressive choreography is by Cathy Marston and appears seemingly effortless by all dancers. The faultless music is played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia and achieves a highly effective sense of atmosphere and emotion.
The Lowry theatre and gallery provides an excellent venue for many culture delights. Several snack bars and a bar and restaurant also provide plenty of refreshment opportunities. All staff were friendly and helpful, and there were no complaints about the cleanliness of the theatre or surrounding areas.
Quick access the M60 makes the Lowry theatre, situated in Salford Quays easily accessible, although allow extra time if in rush hour traffic! Arriving at the Lowry theatre is assisted by clear signs to a large carpark within the Lowry outlet mall, handy if you arrive early. Once you have escaped the car park (signs not immediately clear on which level to exit) access to the theatre is easy along the roadside or through the outlet mall. Several restaurants and cafes are also located within easy walking distance of the theatre.
An impressive performance suitable for couples, friends and families alike. Highly recommended.
Tickets cost from £15.50 to £39 (booking fees may apply).
