My daughter is in need of a new waterproof coat, so I was very pleased to be offered the chance to review a Muddy Puddles Pac-a-Mac from www.muddypuddles.com. We were sent one in the Red Spot design. When it arrived, the package was well wrapped in white plastic with the blue Muddy Puddles design clearly on both sides, this bag states it is 100% degradable, which is always nice to see. Inside, the mac was wrapped in clear plastic and along with that and the invoice, there was a packet of Safari Paw fruit shapes, which was a nice touch and my daughter swiftly demolished them. They also include a sticker with the FREEPOST address on it, which means that if there’s a problem, you simply have to re-wrap the item, stick the sticker on and pop it in a post box.

Upon opening the wrappings, I immediately noticed how sturdy the coat felt, the fabric is very lightweight, but feels durable. The sizing is very good. I received size 2-3 for my daughter, who is 3 in four months, and it is a roomy fit, which is good as it leaves plenty of room for layering warm clothes underneath. The hood and cuffs on the jacket are each lightly elasticated which is helpful as it helps prevent the sleeves slipping down, and it actually keeps the hood on my daughters’ head (this is the first coat that has ever had a hood that properly stayed up). The design I received is red, with grey/light blue spots outlined in white. On the front left hand side there are 3 grey water droplets (which is an intrinsic part of the company’s logo.) Then there is a small label saying Muddy Puddles on the left hand seam. The jacket does up at the front with a zip fastening, and has two pockets, one on each side, and they close with Velcro.

The coat works really well, and I noticed a few design details that really impressed me. Firstly, the fabric is waterproof, which is what you’d expect, but no dampness gets through at all. I was initially worried that the material surrounding the zip may soak up moisture and transfer it onto my daughter’s clothing, but there is a piece of waterproof material underneath it that prevents that. My other concern was that the thread used for stitching the coat together might let moisture through, if we were out in the rain for a prolonged period. But no, the clever people at Muddy Puddles have coated every seam with a layer of translucent plastic, which stops any wetness from getting through. I also love the fact that the coat is machine washable, and I can see this coat being used on long muddy walks and it’s nice to know I can easily get it looking clean and bright again.

One of my favourite things about it is the fact that it neatly folds away into its own pocket. The pocket turns inside out, and has a label for you to write your child’s name on, and a Carabiner clip to stop it getting lost when out and about. This makes it very portable, and easy to stick in a bag in case of sudden showers.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the Muddy Puddles Pac-a-Mac. It does exactly what you’d expect from a waterproof coat, and it does it well. I think the price is very reasonable at £20.00, and I can definitely see myself purchasing another when my daughter outgrows this one.
