Always on the look out for new toy ideas to keep my little one entertained, cutely named ‘Mizzie the kangaroo’ is unlike any Jack in the Box type toy I have come across, so I was excited to see what it had to offer.  Arriving in simple yet practical packaging, the toy itself merely has a carboard wrap around base providing some protection and basic information. No excess packaging at all was used and no plastic wrapping in sight immediately ticks the box when so often new toys come with such high levels of waste.

Immediately the bright bold colour design around the metal box jumps out at you. I liked the simplicity of the beach design and choice of colour tones which I thought made it far more attractive than many toys and certainly not tacky looking. Mizzie herself (the friendly Kangaroo from Sunny Queensland in Australia) features hiding cheekily behind a tree on the front, giving you and your little one a hint of the surprise to come. A wind up music lever on the right then turns to play the traditional music box type music in the tune of ‘pop goes the weasel’. After a few moments this leads to the soft cuddly bright orange smiling Mizzie jumping out from the tree top of the box. It certainly does the job of a jack in the box and led to many giggles from my little one who was eager for the surprise to happen again. Putting Mizzie and then securing her back in the box was a little fiddly and took a bit of adult support. However as one of the brands aims is to help build fine motor skills through practicing turning the lever, I would hope and expect that over time no help will be needed. Hop out Mizzie is also designed to develop further cognitive skills including teaching cause and effect, encouraging curiosity and understanding of spatial relationships. All the brand’s toys are designed to help children learn naturally through play, something that fits with my own parenting ethos.

Hop out Mizzie is designed to be compliant with European, Australian and American standards and the simple design leaves no concerns about small detachable parts. Even the corners of the metal box are rounded to ensure no sharp edges. Mizzie and her box can be wiped down with soapy water in order to keep her clean.

Advertised as suitable for children aged 18 months old and over, this would be an ideal Christmas gift for older babies and toddlers.  Mizzie the Kangaroo also features on many other items which can be found on the brands website. From a browse my other favourites in the toddler range included memory flashcards and several different books. The baby range further includes a natural rubber teething toy as Mizzie herself or a smaller ring version. This creates the perfect range of items to be collected and loved all with the adorable character of Mizzie the Kangeroo. Pricewise at £25.20 Hop Out Mizzie isn’t necessarily one of the best value toys I have come across, however compared to many other gift options for children I would say it was more worthwhile.

I would give this product a rating of 4 out of 5.
