Performed in the Neville Theatre, a theatre within a theatre at the Nottingham Playhouse, Mirror Mirror tells a quirky, fun, original tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with creativity and imagination as well as loads of fun.
The show opens on the evening before Snow White’s wedding when we meet the maid and the cook (played by Clare-Louise English and Naomi Gray) dancing to the Bee Gees and excitedly talking about the wedding when they hear a knock on the door. Fearing it may be the wicked Stepmother they put off answering the door to recap us on the recent goings-on in the story of Snow White.
We were captivated by all the characters and the energy and enthusiasm of the performers. The strong cast of just two people acts out the story of Snow White, playing all the different characters, with the help of puppets and silhouettes. As if this isn’t enough they also take turns to sign the dialogue so the hard of hearing can follow the story too. There are also subtitles for the older readers.
We loved the stepmother disguised as popular fairy tale characters in her attempt to do away with the beautiful Snow White. The talking mirror was one of the highlights of the show and had everyone in the audience laughing and giggling. Stage and set design is amazingly resourceful; acting as the castle kitchen, the Stepmother’s quarters, the dark forest, and also the seven dwarves home.
I went along with my eight-year-old son who was enthralled through and loved every minute. At the end, he talked excitedly about it and thought it was all really cleverly done.
The show is a breath of fresh air and perfect for children over 5, though adults will love it too. The national tour is coming to an end soon, but fingers crossed it will be repeated to thrill and delight more children.
