My partner and our 6 year old visited the Miller & Carter Steakhouse in Epping. Easy to find right on the Wake Arms roundabout and lots of parking space.

When we arrived we saw that the place was extremely clean and fresh looking. I’m not sure how long the restaurant has been open but it had that “new” look about it. No bashed chairs or tables from wear and tear! Warmly greeted we were shown to our table. When we went (2pm on a Sunday) the place was probably about half full but they had spaced people out well, so they didn’t put everyone together which is always more pleasant. Everyone seemed to be smiling and enjoying their food which was a good sign!

The waitress who served us was very polite and genuine with her smiles (I loathe that over smiley stupidity you can sometimes get in restaurants!). She took our drinks order and the drinks came within in a few minutes. About five minutes later she took our order which felt about the right time as we were ready but certainly didn’t feel like we had been waiting. We both chose the tempura prawns and fillet steak. There was no problem when I changed my mind about something. I did think afterwards we really should have had something different as we were reviewing the place but we both love prawns and it is a steak house so we had steak! There are other options of chicken, ribs, pasta and burgers.

The starter arrived promptly. Our son had the garlic bread with cheese. They were generous with the garlic. We adore garlic and often find never enough garlic so it was a nice change. He loved it, sharing it less so! 5 prawns on sweet chilli jam were excellent. Cooked to perfection. Batter not too crispy or too soft and the prawns just right.

The mains came out in a timely manner about five minutes after we had finished the starters, which had been cleared just a few minutes after finishing. I noticed the waitress cast her eye over a few times when we were nearing finishing, staff are very watchful of their tables. My partner had the peppercorn sauce with the fillet steak and I had the blue cheese butter. My partner loves his steak and often cooks it and compares to his and I like it occasionally. We both said the steak was superb. I would have liked it a little warmer but rare steak left to rest how do you do that?! It was delicious. Really melt in your mouth delight. The chips were good and I had the herby potatoes which were packed with flavour. Side dishes are on offer but it comes with lettuce with a dressing, again good. The waitress gave us enough time to have a couple of mouthfuls before coming back to ask if everything was okay and then left us alone to eat which in my opinion is the correct thing to do!

Our son had the fish and chips. We tried the fish which was like the best fish and chip shop fish! The rare occasion when you go to a fish and chip shop and the fish hasn’t been left to be bought and is cooked well, not dried out or undercooked and everyone knows it is a good shop.

I would like to tell you what the desserts were like but I’m sorry we were too full to try them!

The meal, plus a beer a gin and tonic and two large glasses of wine was £85. We thought that was reasonable given it was fillet steak that we had. It was a fabulous meal in nice surroundings with pleasant and attentive staff. We would certainly recommend it and will be going back and we are very critical! Certainly 5 out of 5. Have the gorgeous fillet steak!
