This ballet production adapted by Matthew Bourne from the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty was simply enchanting. Through such magnificent and intense dancing it told the timeless classic of Princess Aurora aka Sleeping Beauty’s story so beautifully beginning in 1890 right through to 2011.

Both Ashley Shaw and Chris Trenfeld who danced as Princess Aurora and the Royal Gamekeeper were mesmerising and utterly captivating while dancing together, completely drawing me into their world. The entire cast and music complimented each other and the tale so beautifully, and had me gripped throughout. However at times I did feel that some of the scenes were perhaps a little drawn out.

The various stage designs were so professional and majestically grand, and set the scene perfectly. The costume designs where magical, and each a little different with a gothic and classic or current twist to them for the different characters and period.

The Theatre Royal is a modern theatre which provides good space to mingle with a choice of bars and toilet facilities on each of the floors, and staff that are helpful and friendly. The theatre itself is intimate and cosy and our seats in row F in the dress circle provided a good view of the stage. The theatre is located in the city centre which means it is easily accessible by public transport and has on street parking close by.

I had a lovely evening watching fantastic dancers tell such a romantic love story. I do understand ballet is not for everyone but would recommend this to my adult friends and family who do or would appreciate something a little different. However, I would suggest that perhaps not necessarily a production for most children.
