Wine, Women & Friends is a documentary about 2 French woman who have full time jobs and making their own award-winning wine in their spare time with no experience and with the help of their friends.

France is well-known for its wine and wine making is still a very macho trade. This documentary looks at how Carole & Jo make their own wine from harvesting the grapes in September to fermenting, bottling and labelling.

This documentary would be more suited to someone with an interest in wine. It is interesting to see the wine making process, how complex it is (not just throwing grapes in a bucket and stamping on them), how much hard work it is, how they get their friends to help with it and how they bring their small community together in France all with just a passion for wine and by no means experts.

This documentary is filmed in French with English subtitles but I found it confusing at times when it occasionally interviewing English friends it then switched to English with French subtitles. Although I don’t speak French I think dubbing the English parts into French would have made the flow better as my brain obviously didn’t kick into gear with the sudden switch!

The only other problem I had with this film is a point is made that they are a lesbian couple and I personally didn’t see the need for it as for me it was a film about wine making, no matter  what the sexual preference of the people making the wine. If it had explored the problems more of how the villagers perceived them and how it affected their business, or not, I could understand it but it just touched on that so made that face redundant.

It you have a passion for wine then this would make a great DVD.

This documentary is a part of a double feature DVD with Croc-A-Dyke Dundee.
