Mariella Mystery Investigates: The Spaghetti Yeti by Kate Pankhurst Review

Reviewed by Natasha Kolb

‘Mariella Mystery investigates The Spaghetti Yeti’ tells the adventures of Mariella Mystery, aged 9 and a bit! She is a huge detective fan and along with her ‘mystery girls’ Poppy and Violet, heads off on a week’s holiday full of mysteries and investigations! It’s written in a diary style, with Mariella detailing the adventures she and her friends get up to.

For those of you that know the popular Tom Gates books, you will be thrilled by this book as it has been created in a similar style and the female main character makes these perfectly suited for girls.

The front cover is colourful and covered in doodles making it appealing for children of all ages. Each page is full of little drawings and doodles which break up many of the paragraphs making it easier and most definitely more interesting to read!

This was read by my daughter, Amber who is 7 and just beginning to attempt thicker books. She enjoyed it, managing to read it independently. She thought it was funny throughout and loved the character of Mariella. She was probably just a little bit too young to fully understand the story though and after a while she had to be encouraged to continue to read it. However, a friend of Amber’s just a year older than her, came to visit and had a read of it, she was then fully immersed in the book for the remainder of the evening!! She had no difficulty with the wording or the content and thoroughly enjoyed the humour! She explained that she liked it because each page had different doodles and even maps. Both girls liked this book in a big way due to the layout and doodles making it different from many books that are currently produced especially for girls.

This book and the others available in the Mariella Mystery series are ideal for children who are becoming more confident in their reading, and are ready for a thicker ‘grown up’ book and yet will continue to interest avid readers also. If your child is a reluctant reader, try them on this book, a great read and a ‘grown up big book’ giving them a sense of pride when the complete it!

With a RRP of just £4.99, this book makes a wonderful Christmas present. We’ll be adding to our Mariella Mystery collection as Amber’s reading ability develops!

Brilliantly written and cleverly illustrated by Kate Pankhurst.
