When a much-loved film is adapted for theatre I have to admit it unnerves me. Basically, I fear that it’s going to be made a hash out of. Then there is the question – do we even need any more musical? Well yes silly, of course we do because when musicals are done right they are amazing! It is a relief then that this Dreamworks animated movie has been adapted beautifully for theatre (phew). For those unfamiliar with the plot it focuses around four animals Alex the lion (Matt Terry), Marty the Zebra (Antoine Murray-Straughan), Gloria the hippo (Timmika Ramsay) and Melman the giraffe (Jamie Lee-Morgan) who are best friends from central Park Zoo. They escape from the zoo in order to see the wild and embark on an adventure through New York city that lands them on the island of Madagascar with the threat of wild animals and Alex quickly turning into a very hungry, wild kitty.
Casting made this show a success with the parts superbly executed by the cast. The essence of each character was captured through their walk, talk and energy. Antoine Murray Straughan was delightful as ever exuberant Marty and even sounded just like Marty from the movie played by Chris Rock.
The songs were exceptional, with funky fresh beats, clever lyrics and the coolest rapping and beat boxing. X factor winner Matt Terry was charismatic as Alex and was in very fine voice, as was Timmika Ramsay (Gloria) – wow those animals could sing! Who knew lions and hippos could reach notes so high? Jo Parsons (King Julien) did a lovely bit of dabbing and flossing and treated us to the eagerly anticipated I like to Move it, Move it!
From Central park Zoo to Central Station and the Antarctica to Madagascar, simple sets made the massive transitions speedy and seemingly effortless to maximum effect. The costumes were amazing, and puppets were used to bring some animals to life which was exceptional too. Jamie Lee Morgan as Melman possibly had the biggest task with his ginormous giraffe puppet but he made it seem effortless and portrayed anxious Melman excellently.
I thoroughly enjoyed this show, it was hilariously funny and I loved the music and dancing. Oh, and the kids really enjoyed it too – a hit for all the family, glad we didn’t miss it.
