You can be transported from the zoo in New York to the wilds of Madagascar at The Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield this week. Selladoor’s production brings the popular array of animals and favourite characters from the animated film to the stage, bringing a sense of nostalgia and excitement.
Joseph Hewlett’s portrayal of Alex the Lion is fun, he brings awesome vocals and the essence of the character who is happy with his lot. I like his stage presence as he seems to lean into the role and enjoy it so we have no trouble perceiving the character in his movement and expressions. It’s those sorts of performances which carry a production and allow us to believe, even if only for a short time, what we’re seeing on stage.
Similarly, Jarneia Richard-Noel shines as Gloria the Hippopotamus, showcasing her impressive vocal skills and adding sweetness and warmth to the role. Gloria is a fun character and sometimes the soothing voice of the group. Jarneia is known for performing in SIX, so if you’ve seen her there you’ll have an idea of her vocal capability.

The staging and set designs are bright and fun, clearly delineating the brick and concrete of the city and zoo versus the wilds, colour, and light of the tropics. It’s not difficult to become engaged although the story line is simplistic. However, it’s pitched well for a family show. My 11 year old found it fun and really enjoyed the character of King Julien. There were lots of year 7 and 8 kids as well as families in the audience and everyone seemed transfixed. It’s a relatively short show with a run time under two hours with a break. Perhaps it could have covered more of the original storyline details but then it might run the risk of the shorter attention spans of younger theatre goers. It feels just enough.
Another fun element are the puppets and puppeteering from the performers who bring the madness of the penguins and King Julien’s entourage. My favourite was Mort, super cute and ridiculously silly. The second half of the show really reaches a peak of energy and busy visuals on stage.
You’ll hear the favourites you might remember from the animated film such as “I Like To Move It, Move It” and the audience joined in clapping along. There’s also a chance to get on your feet and dance along at the end. Some of the music is unique to the show and I found Alex The Lion’s lament about steak amusing.
This is a fun and light hearted show and suitable for all the family. It has an earlier start time to accommodate bedtimes of younger audience members and you’ll be out before 9pm.
The show is only here until the 25th but there are daytime and evening performances. There are some great tickets left, but not many, so book now for a fun family show.
Tickets vary from £15.00 to £40.00 and you can book at the box office on 0114 249 6000 or www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/events/madagascar-musical
