Easter may not quite be here yet, but you would be forgiven for thinking it was tomorrow from the huge selection of Easter eggs and Easter themed goodies in the supermarkets. With a packed aisle of mouth-watering chocolates to choose from, it’s hard to know which to purchase, especially if you are buying for someone special.
If your budget stretches to double figures for a chocolate egg then you want something that both looks fabulous and tastes delicious, that’s where Lily O’Brien’s collection of large eggs stand out on the shelves, as their beautiful designs make them look particularly appetising. For a RRP of £13 you can choose from a selection of eggs such as honeycomb hearts, sea salted caramels & sticky toffee, all with a large 345g, or more, supply of chocolate within.
I was lucky enough to be sent a Lily O’Briens Desserts Collection egg to try, a hand crafted chocolate egg complete with nine chocolates. When the egg arrived in the post, thankfully unbroken and in perfect condition, despite a couple of days at the sorting office, I loved the colours of the packaging, the burgundy red and brown made it look like the premium brand it is. The box had a cut out in it so you could easily see the displayed egg surrounded by the different chocolates, three of each design, and looked absolutely delicious, I couldn’t wait to get stuck in!
Lily O’Brien’s is an Irish brand, still headed up by Mary Ann O’Brien from her premises in Co Kildare. Started in 1992, when she discovered her passion for chocolate after recovering from a serious illness, she named the Company after her then toddler, Lily. After spending time in Europe and South Africa perfecting her craft with various chocolatiers, she returned to Ireland to create her own collection of chocolates. The Desserts collection is inspired by some of her favourite desserts such as banoffee pie, crème brulee & key lime pie. The Desserts collection egg contains three varieties from the collection, the crème brulee, key limey pie and raspberry infusion, which looks particularly attractive with its raspberry sprinkles on top. All three are identically shaped chocolate cups but filled with a different filling. The egg itself is a really good size and nicely decorated with white chocolate and pink lines across creating a tartan effect.
The chocolate egg itself tasted deliciously creamy and smooth, making a great contrast to the chocolates inside. The deep rich flavours of the raspberry and lime went perfectly with the dark chocolate shells and the crème brulee was smooth and tasty against the the 30% minimum cocoa solids contained in the milk chocolate cup. The dark chocolate contains a minimum of 55% cocoa solids and neither contain any artificial colours or flavours. Whilst suitable for vegetarians it is not suitable for anyone with a nut or dairy allergy due to the ingredients used.
The Lily O’Brien’s Desserts Collection Easter egg is a really great looking and tasty egg with the added advantage of having 3 different types of individual chocolates to try. A perfect buy if you are looking for someone special or just want to spend a little more.
I highly recommend this egg and I will certainly be looking into purchasing some of the different Lily O’Brien varieties for my friends and family.
