We were super excited to be given the opportunity to review Waitress the musical on the opening night at The Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham. Parking is close by reasonable, and locating the concert hall within Nottingham is easy.

There was no disappointment on our part from the offset it was action packed. The story unfolded well and you felt numerous emotions throughout the performance from laughing, frustration, happiness, caring, empathy and joy just the name a few. The storyline is based in a small town around Joe’s Pie Diner and Jenna’s love for the creation of scrumptious pies. The Pie naming displays where Jenna’s head is at and adds to the storyline by creating meaning.

Joe has a special connection with Jenna and it is evident throughout so many scenes. The true show of affection on Joe’s part hits towards the end. Throughout the storyline there is revelation after revelation which keeps you captivated and transfixed throughout. The friendship bond between Jenna, Becky and Dawn is strong and they have many laughs and do their upmost to support one another.

Jenna’s marriage with Earl is up and down. Earl is arrogant, overbearing and possessive. Jenna’s marriage is on the rocks and she desires a life of happiness when she falls pregnant. She plans to skip town then falls head over heads for her doctor. This gets both of there blood pumping! That’s not the only thing happening with the doctor to be honest. Lots of amusing scenes follow in this section.

The stage scene changes are smooth and flow well. The costumes are great. The singing and vocals are on another level. The orchestra is uplifting and powerful and also note perfect. The range of characters/actors was spot on. Ever character put their all into their performances. One of my favourites was the doctor played by David Hunter whom is not only an excellent actor but has played alongside popular bands such as Scouting for girls and McFly. How great is that! The doctor came across as plain but my goodness he did have a naughty playful side! My favourite scenes were those within the doctors room. The hospital scene was particularly good especially when Jenna found her inner strength and directed it at Earl. In order to allow he to pursue happiness and to be true to herself. My least favourite character was Earl he was the baddie. There was so my good actors on this stage all with there own unique talent. It was a fabulous performance and great night out. I could watch it all over again.

I do not want to say too much more about the performance and give it completely away. The only thing left to say is get your ticket(s) booked it is a great show and a great night out. You will not be disappointed you will be left wanting seconds just like you do when you have eaten a scrumptious pie.
