La Boheme at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh Review

31 May to 10 June 2017

The Scottish Opera’s production of La Boheme is a moving love story set in Paris about Mimi, a very ill seamstress, who drops into her neighbour Rodolfo – a struggling writer, to light her candle. After spending the evening together, they fall madly in love but Mimi’s illness proves to much for the couple to live a long and happy life together.

Hey-Youn Lee sings beautifully as Mimi with such a powerful and majestic voice. And Luis Gomes is wonderful as her true love. Together they captivate the audience with such emotional performances. Rodolfo’s group of friends played by David Stout, Damien Pass, Bozidar Smiljanic and Jeanine De Bique are also fantastic as they gather around through the ups and downs of Mimi and Rodolfo’s romance.

The stage set is magnificent and the costumes so elegant and eye catching. Between the beautiful voices of the cast, the magnificent music by the orchestra and the extravagant stage and costumes I was captivated and couldn’t take my eyes of the stage from beginning to end of this production. I was caught up entirely in the story.

The Festival Theatre is a modern extremely spacious theatre with a choice of bars on each floor and helpful, friendly staff. It is a very nice space to have drinks pre, during and post show. The theatre is located in the city centre which means it is easily accessible by public transport and is surrounded by on street parking as well as an array or bars and restaurants for pre and post show drinks and food.

I really enjoyed my evening at the Festival Theatre. This is a moving love story performed beautifully by an extremely talented cast and orchestra that will have you gripped from beginning to end. Overall, I would give the night 4.5 stars out of 5 and would definitely recommend to friends and family.
