Kinky Boots is a feel-good show with a strong moral message about accepting people as they are and believing in yourself.

The true story of shoemakers in Northampton who saved their business by making female footwear for men inspired the 2005 film Kinky Boots, before taking to the stage with the book by Harvey Fierstein, the music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.

After escaping the family business for a better life in London with his fiancé, Charlie receives a devastating blow of his father’s death and returns to Northampton reluctantly taking the helm of the shoe making company Price and Son. As he gives notice to his employees, Lauren’s words give him inspiration after he encounters Lola the Drag Queen. Charlie is inspired to produce shoes and boots fit to take a man’s weight. With Lola as designer they produce a dazzling range of boots for a Milan Fashion Show. With a few bumps along the way, they produce a spectacular display with exquisite costumes and fabulous footwear!

Joel Harper-Jackson and Kayi Ushe play the very strong lead roles of Charlie Price and the spectacular Lola respectively.

The powerful musical score by Cyndi Lauper covers every emotion with songs such as The Most Beautiful Thing in the World, The History of Wrong Guys and Soul of a Man but my favourite musical number was Not my Father’s Son, a vulnerable and soulful performance by Lola and Charlie.

The staging was clever with the use of height and moving stairs, but my daughter was fascinated by the conveyor belt!

The King’s Theatre is on Bath Street in Glasgow which is a short walk from Buchanan Street. We were seated in row O of the stalls where the visibility was good.

The recommended minimum age is 10 years old due to the content.
