In the vibrant heart of Leicester, the Curve Theatre recently played host to a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” that can only be described as divinely captivating.  This masterpiece, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, stands as a testament to the incredible impact and professionalism inherent in this musical.  Its powerful lyrics, mesmerising music, and dynamic dance numbers were elevated to celestial heights by an exceptionally talented cast. Leading the charge was Ian McIntosh, whose portrayal of Jesus was both profound and heart-rending, embodying the character with an emotional depth that was truly awe-inspiring.

Matching McIntosh’s intensity, Shem Omari James brought a magnetic charisma to the role of Judas, delivering a performance that was nothing short of electrifying.  His vocal range and emotional depth added layers of complexity to a character that is as conflicted as he is captivating.  Hannah Richardson, stepping into the serene shoes of Mary, added a gentle but powerful presence to the mix.  Her performance was a testament to the strength found in softness, her voice a soothing balm amidst the tumultuous events unfolding on stage.

The staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Curve was a visual feast, cleverly designed to resemble a cross between a building site and a quaint village.  This setting provided a unique backdrop for the biblical tale, offering a fresh perspective on the timeless story of Jesus and his disciples, friends, and foes.  Yet, amidst the splendour, there were moments when the show’s very vibrancy became its Achilles’ heel.  The energetic staging occasionally made the storyline challenging to follow, and at times, the vigorous backing music overpowered the actors’ voices, detracting from the narrative clarity.

However, any critique fades in comparison to the show’s standout moments, particularly the performance of “Gethsemane.”  Here, McIntosh, alongside James, showcased an extraordinary match of vocals and dancing that was nothing short of spellbinding.  This scene alone was worth the price of admission, leaving an indelible mark on the audience’s hearts.

Moreover, the melody of “Everything’s Alright” became an earworm that lingered long after the curtain fell.  Its hauntingly beautiful composition and execution had me humming all the way home, a testament to the show’s ability to resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level.

Special mention must go to the makeup artists (led by Giuseppe Cannas), whose efforts in creating the battered body of Jesus were profoundly impactful.  The portrayal of pain was so realistic that it brought an additional layer of depth and emotion to the performance, underscoring the narrative’s gravity and enhancing the audience’s engagement.

Adding to the overall experience, the Curve Theatre provides a perfect setting for this intimate show, one that will have you feeling all the emotions.  However, it’s worth noting the age guidance is fair, as younger audiences might struggle to keep up with the story.  Additionally, the use of flashing lights should be considered; at times, I felt “blinded” by the light strobes.  If you are sensitive to this, opting for a seat further to the back might enhance your viewing experience.

Overall, “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Leicester Curve Theatre is a 4 out of 5 for me.  It’s a must-see musical for everyone, showcasing the unmatched professionalism and impact of Tim Rice’s lyrics and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music.  Tickets are available from the Curve’s website (https://www.curveonline.co.uk/whats-on/shows/jesus-christ-superstar-2/book/225602) or box office booking line (0116 242 3595) and can be seen from Monday 12th February to Saturday 17th February, with prices ranging from £10 to £55.  This production promises an enlightening and entertaining experience, making it a truly heavenly spectacle not to be missed.
