Jean Harrod’s “It Began With a Ghost Story” beckons readers into a captivating blend of mystery, paranormal intrigue, and the complexities of human relationships.  The novel introduces us to Grace, a young woman inheriting her late mother’s secret cottage nestled in the enchanting North York Moors.  What initially appears to be a journey of sorting through her mother’s belongings soon transforms into a whirlwind of suspense and action.

As Grace gathers her friends to assist in this emotional task, the narrative takes an unexpected turn when a murder occurs down the road at a local spot steeped in the ghostly folklore of Kitty Garthwaite.  The atmosphere becomes charged with tension as the group finds themselves entangled in a perplexing whodunit mystery.  The novel skilfully weaves the threads of romance, suspense, and the supernatural, creating a rich tapestry of emotions and intrigue.

The central plot revolves around the investigation into the murder, with Grace’s best friend, Evie, emerging as the prime suspect.  Harrod introduces a fascinating parallel between Evie’s struggles with mental health and the notorious Kitty Garthwaite, known for claiming the lives of lost and lustful young men in an attempt to avenge her troubled past. This thematic exploration adds layers of depth to the narrative, as the boundaries between reality and the supernatural blur.

Harrod’s evocative storytelling captures the eerie atmosphere of the North York Moors, infusing the tale with strange shadows, mists, and unexplained noises that heighten the suspense.  The group of friends finds themselves surrounded by paranormal activity, adding an element of the unknown to their already tense situation.  The author masterfully builds tension, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with each mysterious occurrence.

While it may take a few chapters to fully invest in the characters and storyline, once engrossed, readers will find it challenging to put the book down.  The novel unfolds with a series of incredible realizations, unexpected twists, and turns that keep the narrative fresh and engaging.  Harrod’s ability to seamlessly blend genres and introduce unexpected elements contributes to the overall thrill of the reading experience.

“It Began With a Ghost Story” serves as an excellent introduction to Jean Harrod’s writing, leaving readers eager to explore more of her works.  The first book in the Grace Winters crime series delivers a satisfying combination of mystery, romance, and the supernatural, making it a highly recommended read for avid enthusiasts of the genre.  With its compelling characters and a plot that keeps readers guessing until the end, this novel is a testament to Harrod’s storytelling prowess.

The book itself is very well presented with 329 pages cover to cover of intrigue, ambiguity, mystery, and suspense, the front cover is beautifully illustrated with a captivating image of the North York Moors and the apparition of the legendary Kitty Garthwaite.  It is clear that Jean Harrod is very familiar with area as she writes with such confidence, clarity and description of the surroundings.  This is not a children’s book nor should it be given to anyone under the age of 18 as the first chapter is a little racy with some sexualised language.
