Twirlywoos Live at the St Helens Theatre Royal Review

This afternoon I took my two year old daughter to St Helens Theatre Royal to watch Twirlywoos Live. Twirlywoos is a very popular CBeebies show aimed at preschoolers, my daughter always enjoys watching it on TV so I knew she would love the stage version.

The show had all the usual Twirlywoos characters including, the Quacky Birds, Great Big Hoo, Toodle-oo, Chickedy, Chick and Peek-a-boo. All the puppets were familiar to the audience and the children were clearly excited to see their favourite characters on stage. The set was bright and inviting, changing from a beach scene, to the big red boat, to a launderette, to a pizzeria then back to the big red boat in the most engaging way. The puppeteer’s were excellent at manoeuvring the puppets as well as acting as other characters, in other children’s shows we have watched with puppets the puppeteers can be distracting but the four artists in this show were brilliant.

St Helens Theatre Royal is a lovely theatre located in the centre of town, it’s directly opposite the bus station so easily accessible via public transport and there are a number of car parks within walking distance of the theatre. If you are visiting the theatre with young children you can hire booster seats from the box office for a fully refundable deposit of £10.

This performance was aimed at children aged 1+ and was perfect for young children. There were lots of bright colours and interesting sets to look at, the show was full of songs and interactive dialogue to keep the children engaged and on a number of occasions the actors came out into the audience which was very exciting. Plus there were bubbles! I’ve not yet met a toddler who doesn’t like bubbles. My daughter really enjoyed this show, it was only 50 minutes long so not too long for small people to stay interested and she sat transfixed for most of it. A lovely show for all little children to enjoy.
