Protected: Rose and Caramel – Purity Self Tan Removing Shower Gel Review

Reviewed by Jayne Knight This product had me intrigued from the outset. How could a shower gel remove fake tan, better than my regular shower gel and water? My first quest was to discover the difference. I fully accept that different manufacturers tweak their recipes, so would have been surprised to find exactly the same compounds in use. The one I am currently using actually has more ingredients, designed for sensitive skin. Basically, the two have the same main ingredients, which produce the base shower gel. It is from here that the tweaks occur with the addition of Urea in the Rose and Caramel product. Many soaps and cleansers contain harsh alkali detergents that wash away the epidermal lipids and moisturising factors that form skin's natural protective barrier. This product is further enriched with Urea that bind moisture into the upper layer of the skin, However, there is a down-side to this. As urea comes from urine, it contains ammonia which, in water, acts as a caustic but weak base. Its high pH breaks down organic material. So, I can only deduce from this that, strange as it sounds, urea in a skin product can be a good thing, removing dead skin cells and moisturising all at the same time. So, a double-edged sword. Task two – use of the product. Following the instructions in the leaflet supplied I applied the shower gel – It appears from web research that this only comes available in Mango and Pommegranate fragrance, which is quite refreshing, if a little limiting with no other fragrances on offer. Using the mitts supplied I managed a healthy foam, left for the required time (3minutes) and began to wipe away. I have to say that at this point I realised the necessity of the roughness of the mitts. Where self-tan is not as deeply applied, it removes with relative ease, but where it is darker, e.g. ankle bones and elbows it took more work with the mitts to remove. For me, the mitts are probably the over-riding factor in the efficiency of this product. Dependant on how much self-tan needs to be removed, the mitts are used to exfoliate and slough away the upper layers of skin. The shower gel, with the help of the urea content only serve to soften the skin, so making it easier to remove. I did a comparison test on one leg, using my own shower gel, at the same time, so effectively both products were used in exactly the same way. I found no difference. It still took the mitts to remove the self-tan. Task 3 – the aesthetics. The shower gel comes in an easy to use, pump action, clear plastic bottle. The contents are a marbled white, thick gel, which on opening gives a gentle aroma or fresh fruit. It is easy to use, as per the instructions and does leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed – but so does my usual one. Answer; in my opinion, Rose and Caramel have produced a beautifully fragranced shower gel, which leaves your skin feeling soft and silky, but does not wholly stand up to its claims as a self-tan remover.
