I am a huge fan of Harvester restaurants so was delighted to be asked to review The Two Rivers in Staines-Upon-Thames, Surrey, and as the day we picked to review was my birthday I was really looking forward to it.
We are not from Surrey but had plans to stay close by, not being familiar with the area we found the Harvester easy to find and there is ample parking a few moments walk away from £1 an hour.
Once parked we walked to the restaurant, I thought it was in an ideal area in the high street with lots of shops and banks around. The building is typical of a Harvester, it looked clean and fresh. We were greeted as we walked in and asked how many guests we had and took us to a table, there was no wait which was nice. I felt the restaurant was a good size, clean and tidy with lots highchairs on offer, we did not need one on our trip but it is good to know.
The waitress handed us a drinks menu and I ordered a Berry Smoothie and my husband had a beer, we were left to look at the menu and told to help ourselves to the unlimited salad bar that comes free with every meal. I found the salad bar well stocked and the area clean. When the waitress returned I ordered The Fish Basket; Crackerjack prawns, scampi & fish goujons with tartare sauce £5.29 and my husband had Potato Skins with Bacon & Cheese £3.89 Three potato skins loaded with gooey mozzarella, cheddar cheese and crispy bacon, served with a sour cream & chive dip, the waitress explained that you can have any three starters for £10 or four for £12.50 but we decided to just have the two we ordered.
As we waited I went to the bathroom, I did find it slightly confusing as it is just a line of toilets with a male or female sign on located in the same area (I almost went into a male one) but they were well stocked and very clean. They are up a few floors of stairs but there is a toilet on the lower floor for people who may struggle with the stairs.
On returning our starters had arrived and I thought they were well presented in little baskets, I loved mine, the Crackerjack Prawns were like heaven in my mouth and my husband found the Potato Skins amazing. After we had finished we were asked what we would like as a main, I am a vegetarian and there were three choices of meals plus some with fish, I decided on Cauliflower Cheese & Tomato Tart (V) £7.99 Shortcrust pastry filled with creamy cauliflower cheese topped with roasted cherry tomatoes. Served with buttered green beans and my husband had 6oz Rump Steak with buttered peas, a baked herbed tomato, and your choice of sauce and a side £9.99 he choose Tennessee Whiskey made with Jack Daniel’s as his sauce.
I noticed as we waited that the place was very busy and the staff did appear at times slightly overwhelmed by this, one of the waitresses dropped a glass jug of water on the floor but this was dealt with quickly and most staff were very polite.
Our waitress returned with our meals and we both commented on how generous the portions were, my husband’s looked wonderful I was almost tempted to eat it. I thought the sweet potatoes looked like heaven but was slightly disappointed with my tart as it was slightly burnt and the presentation wasn’t the best I have had, I have ordered this meal in other Harvester’s before.
The taste of both meals did not disappoint though and we were both delighted and very well fed!
Afterwards we were both very full but decided to share a Lemon Blizzard (v) £3.99; Layers of light, crisp meringue with a zesty lemon sauce, topped with a crispy wafer and I must say this was my favourite part of the meal, it was so light and refreshing! I adore whipped cream so I was very pleased.
Harvester do meals from £4.99 and a children’s menu from £3.99 so there really is something to suit any budget, they also do a takeaway menu which I think is pure genius so you can enjoy the food from home! Harvester also very handily tell you the calories in each menu so you can keep an eye on what you are eating and with opening hours from 9am to 11pm there are always there whatever the time to feed you!
We both enjoyed our meals at the Harvester, I was slightly let down by my main course and some of the members of staff being very stressed out, but this was mainly due to it being my birthday meal.
