Being Vegan or requiring a gluten free diet does not mean you have to miss out on the all important Christmas tradition of the chocolate Advent calendar. With Advent calendar’s beginning to fill the supermarket shelves, I was very pleased to be given the opportunity to try our the Happi Free From advent calendar to assist me with my choice.

When the calendar arrived, covered in a thin clear film, it was a traditional rectangular shape and size but without the traditional festive scenes. Instead, it had a modern fun and colourful design with smiling funny shaped faces topped with snow, it was also clearly marked “I’m Vegan” on the front. The youthful design covers 24 regular shaped doors each hiding a single chocolate shape. Turning over to the reverse of the calendar you can clearly see it is not only suitable for vegans, but it is also gluten, soya & palm oil free, as well as being dairy, egg & nut free which makes it a good choice for those who might have specific food intolerances.

The calendar is handcrafted in the UK using vegetable based inks and all of the packaging is fully recyclable making it a guilt free choice. Even the inner tray that holds the chocolates is made from a minimum of 75% recycled plastic material. The Company, Happi, state their Happi Pledge on the reverse of the box, which is to give 1% of their annual net sales revenue to good causes and mental health organisations, which is another great reason to spend your money on this particular calendar instead of others when making your choice this year.

If you are worried about the taste or texture of the chocolate compared to standard dairy milk chocolate, don’t be, its delicious. Behind each door is four-gram square of chocolate imprinted with four different, that I have found so far anyway, funny faced designs. The chocolate looks very dark, so I expected it to be very strong, like plain chocolate, but the oat milk used instead of the traditional dairy milk, gives a lovely creamy taste as the chocolate melts in your mouth, it was very tempting to keep opening doors!

As expected, the Happi Oak milk calendar isn’t the cheapest on the shelves at around £7.50 each, but the taste is great and you can relax in the knowledge that 1% of the purchase price is going to good causes. It can be brought direct from Happi but only as a two pack bundle or the Christmas bundle, which contains the advent calendar together with a selection pack & a pack of chocolate spoons. It should also be making its way into specialist shops and supermarkets very soon.

This great quality and great tasting oat milk chocolate calendar backed by the Happi Pledge & coming complete with recyclable packaging, makes it the Advent Calendar of choice for anyone that requires vegan or gluten free chocolate or those with a dairy intolerance. Whether it’s a treat for yourself or someone else, I highly recommend it and it would have got 5 out of 5 if it wasn’t a little on the pricey side.
