Arriving at the theatre I was pleasantly surprised to see how calm and controlled the area was, the staff dealt very well with the excitable audience that were attending the show. They appeared to take time to talk to the children as they went in, asking for their tickets and explaining to the children where they would be sitting, as a trained childcare worker I am aware how important it is to include children in what is happening.
We were seated four rows from the front and they had set a basic stage of a beach, the children talked what was going to happen, who they would see. One comment I did hear a few times was about the children not being able to see due to a lack of cushions for them to sit on but as the show started they were able to move closer to the front in order to have a good view.
As Grandpa’s voice came over the speaker the room exploded into shouts and happy giggles as they listen to him explain the show would begin soon.
I found the story was presented well and easy to follow, engaging even for an adult. There were plenty of songs and dances to keep the children entertained I noticed a lot of the younger having a little dance along.
The lighting was excellent providing a clear view of the stage and I felt the props were appropriate for the setting and age of the children, there was enough to look at but not so much it would distract from the story.
The children were very excited to see all the different characters from the show; I was amazed as the actors changed from one to another, often changing accents.
The first part of the show lasted 45 minutes which I felt was enough as there were some very small children and I know how hard to can be to be able to keep a young child still for that long, so they had a chance to run around before they came back to watch the rest of the show. During the second half the children were as happy and thrilled as the first half, shouting out answers as the actors really engaged the children. Again offering lots of chances to sing and dance which aided some of the younger members of the audience to remain focused and enjoy the show.
One point I would make is that some of the younger children, more so the under three’s did seem a little restless and whilst I imagine they are huge fans of the show, the live show may have been too much for them.
I felt in whole the show was well thought out, you did not need to be a fan of the show to watch but it would enhance your pleasure if you were.
The staff were fantastic and engaging with the children and the staff friendly and approachable a great afternoon out for all the family.
